  1. 1. What is the cause for shortages?

    • Customers make up their own price
    • Customers REFUSE TO PAY
    • Customers are STEALING MONEY

I think the primary cause of shortages are from people who forget to pay (or don't have cash).

I think the secondary cause of shortages are from people who make up their own prices (ie. they only have 67 cents, so they figure it's good enough for the snack that is clearly advertised at $1).

Please discuss!

I definitely agree with you. When it comes to the cause of shortage, I think people forgetting to pay is about 20% and people who make up their own prices is about 40%. People who think they can just take want they want when they want is the remaining 40%.

You don't have cleaning crews and contractors on the poll.

Well that sort of goes under stealing or not paying. I STRONGLY believe that contractors and cleaning crews are NO more thieving than regular employees.

People who work alone and without supervision? Maybe...

As do I. I only brought it up because I've seen many comments on here from honor box operators who say when they confront a location about shortage, the location will blame it on cleaning crews or contractors.

Agreed Chris.  My hunch is that outright malicious theft is the minority.  I choose to believe most people have good intentions and they start getting a little lax - until they are reminded and the shortage goes back down.

I had to talk with the owner at a location. 46 items sold, 27 dollars collected. 19 dollars short. The problem is that I STILL make about $20/month in profit even with this astronomical shortage.

They blamed contractors for the shortage. Come on... I'm still going to keep the account for a while. I did propose installing a snack machine but it was turned down.

Musser is spot on, no matter what vend prices, commissions, cost of equipment, shortage, stales, etc. The only thing that matters is the location profitable? I know we are talking about honor boxes but this applies to vending, coffee service, point of use water coolers, etc.

Of course. Vending machines are different because shortages are not a factor. But it is very important to recognize real profits rathrr than focusing on the shortage percentage.

What I'm doing for now is what I do with a few more accounts. I give them product with about 2 weeks expiration on them because they consumer everything anyway. At leadt I make profits without throwing out outdated product.

  • 1 month later...

err, those that cant decide what they want.

so they pay 1.00 and eat a few until they find something they like...

I had a note on mine once,

Employees, if you are short of cash, it's ok to have ONE,

just don't forget to pay on payday!
