Spragues Vending
Hello Everyone, I have bought two boxes of the 175CT York Peppermint Patties over the last couple weeks from BJ's. The first box I bought contained 185 pieces and the second box I purchased contained 183 pieces! I'm not complaining by any means. I'm just curious, have I just been getting lucky or have you all found extra patties in your boxes?
BradMillner46
I haven't been counting exactly how many are in each box but I've noticed that a number of these boxes have at least a few of the York miniatures ripped open from their packages and are thus stale and just sitting there in the boxes. I have a feeling that the Hershey company is cutting back on quality control and I think it's a sign of bad business practice. I also think it's really bad business practice that they don't offer discounts to vendors for any of their miniature candy unless you buy 5,000 pounds or more and they say that you MUST have a shipping dock to do that. That's why I'm pretty much finished with doing business with them. Has anyone else had boxes of York mininatures that have ripped open packages and stale mints inside? Maybe they know you are bound to get a few bad patties in each batch. So they throw in a few extra. If you are paying for 175 patties but they are giving you 180+, it's not an issue that "a few" are bad. You may want to count the box newdawnrising...you may be getting what you paid for despite having "a few" bad patties in each box.
BradMillner46
What they're doing I think very well may be violating health code regulations. I don't know if there are health code regulations involving interstate commerce (I imagine that there most certainly is) but I do know that my own state does have health code regulations that can be awful strict. I've oredered York patties for a long time now and I've never seen this happen before. Now suddenly I'm seeing this happen quite frequently and that tells me that there has to be an issue from the manufacturers end. There's obviously no way that once that box is closed and sealed from the manufacturers end that those Yorks can be ripped out of their packages like that. Also even if it does total 175 mints per box, that doesn't exclude them from following health code regulations. All it would take is for you to accidentally drop one of those mints into your box during service and then someone else (like a child) pick it up and eat it and then get sick for you to get sued. Spragues Vending
I haven't found any opened packages yet but I have found like one or two that were smashed and some packages that were sealed but didn't have a mint inside. I agree with Sherlock. Even though you get a couple bad mints in a box, if you are getting some extra mints it all makes up for it. I would definitely count your mints because you might be getting extra.
Spragues Vending
I see what your saying but this is exactly why I count and inspect every mint in the box (not sure if you do). If you are seeing a loss in the mints they have a number on the back of the box which is 1-800-468-1714. Even if you are not seeing a loss but if you are having a couple bad mints in a box, I'm sure they would appreciate your feedback.

Imagine the things that bored and/or stupid people can do to honor-box product after it's placed on location and you aren't around. While torn wrappers from the factory may be a health and lawsuit risk, the risks honor box vendors take from leaving product exposed to never-do-wells is much much higher. As an honor-box vendor, I'd worry more about the product being exposed to idle hands than I'd worry about wrappers coming torn from the factory....the risk of health/lawsuit trouble is so much higher with the first scenario than it is with the second. BradMillner46
That number is for the Hershey's company. I've called them before but you can only speak with a front line phone rep and they seem to just give the trained corporate speech "Yes we're very sorry for the mishap and we'll check into that" and then nothing happens. It makes me feel like I were at Sam's Club/Wal-Mart. This has also not just happened with a few boxes for me, but with maybe around as many as a few of them out of each case (there's 9 per case) and I go through quite a few of these cases per week now. It's also not just this issue but the fact that they won't even give discounts for these unless you buy 5,000 pounds and you have to have a shipping dock, business insurance, etc. As far as I'm concerned, Hershey's Company has lost a lot of credibility with me. BradMillner46
True Sherlock, but that issue as well as the other issue I stated I think reflects poorly on a company. That's at least as far as the perspective of the small business owner like myself goes. The fact that you can't get any better discount than the average person can with buying these York Patties, regardless of the fact that you are buying so many more of them than the average person does, I think most certainly is a real poor business practice on behalf of the Hershey's Company. sherlock
If you will only deal with companies that give a hoot about the small-business owner you won't be carrying any national brands in those honor boxes.

I have been using Yorks in my boxes for over a tear with no issues. If you have a problem take it to Sams or BJ and I know they will take care of it, plus if they get a complaint from them Hersey will respond. They pack more than 175 because of empties and they are sold by count and they have to have at least 175 in the box. This is why I don;t want to buy direct. I use Sams warehouse and they solve any problem, It is worth paying the extra. I just like the Sensation of a quarter for a York

Grazing Hippo Vending
I no longer count every box but when I did I always had more than 175. I still stumble upon some that are smashed up but I put those in a "reject" box and my buddy Dennis eats them when he comes over.

BradMillner46
So you're seeing it also then FrCorey. Regardless of whether there are more are less Yorks in there now and even if it violates health code regulations or not, I think it shows exceptionally poor quality on behalf of a company (Hershey's) to have box after box packaged full of ripped open York Peppermint Patties that are just laying in there stale and disgusting. treadmill
I have been using these also, about 12 cases per month for about a year and a half now. Have never found any open candy wrappers but have found a the quantity to always be over the 175 amount. Happy camper here. Sounds like sour grapes to me. Dreaded13
What are you guys selling the 175ct patties for? And are they the 70% reduced fat patties?
Grazing Hippo Vending
Yes, 70% reduced fat. I charge 50¢ or 3/$1.00 for my York boxes. I think its more common to charge 25¢ though. I'm in upstate NY and haven't had any issues at the higher price point. Good luck!

redmms250713
dont mean to off topic this, what does BJ's charge you guys for 175 mints? Anyone know if sams sell them? I buy them from walmart in a smaller pack of palmers of about 46 of em, for like $2.50, they have a bigger pack but for some reason they cost more per ounce!!! Ive noticed alot of stuff is like that tho, like red hots in the $1 movie box's are cheaper per ounce than a big bag lol.
