kdub3821
I have drilled down to the threaded rod but the lid is still tight
bhfisher
not sure about uturn, but I understand you need to drill with 1/4" drill bit, 1/4 inch down direct center. Maybe try slightly larger drill bit? Bart
Rick
I am by no means an expert at drilling out locks, but I usually just drill 7-10 times in various directions (anywhere EXCEPT direct center to avoid hitting the stem) until the lock pretty much disintegrates. kdub3821
I got it out. I did drill straight down until I hit the thread. Then I used pliers to twist the lock off of the threaded rod.thanks for the advice.
pjvend
why drill? Flat key youturns open with a flat screwdriver. Use a small pipe wrench to add to ease of opening.

RikaKazak
Glad you got it off. If it's one of those spinning style locks, use a left handed drill bit and drill in reverse...makes the process SOOO much easier. And if you drill to the rod, but it still won't come out. Use a bigger drill bit and hold onto the machine tightly. When it tries to start a new/bigger hole it'll have a tough time doing it but will "spin off" the lock. (just make sure you're using the drill bit/drilling direction that helps with coming off, not fights against it) Glad you got it figured out Just posting so others could know if they stumble on this thread through a google search or something. rodney69
in the future you can use a 1/8" drill bit as a pilot hole, then use a 3/16" drill bit. It will pop the piece just before the threads if you drill it straight. The locks from what I can tell won't do the screw driver trick any more, but I will have to try it on one of my extra locks now just to check!! LOL!
