How to drill a lock on a u turn

I am by no means an expert at drilling out locks, but I usually just drill 7-10 times in various directions (anywhere EXCEPT direct center to avoid hitting the stem) until the lock pretty much disintegrates.

Glad you got it off.

If it's one of those spinning style locks, use a left handed drill bit and drill in reverse...makes the process SOOO much easier.

And if you drill to the rod, but it still won't come out.  Use a bigger drill bit and hold onto the machine tightly.  When it tries to start a new/bigger hole it'll have a tough time doing it but will "spin off" the lock.  (just make sure you're using the drill bit/drilling direction that helps with coming off, not fights against it)

Glad you got it figured out :D  Just posting so others could know if they stumble on this thread through a google search or something.

in the future you can use a 1/8" drill bit as a pilot hole, then use a 3/16" drill bit. It will pop the piece just before the threads if you drill it straight. The locks from what I can tell won't do the screw driver trick any more, but I will have to try it on one of my extra locks now just to check!! LOL!
