Machine repair by the seat of my pants

Last Friday I get a call that my Royal 804 is not working and reading "sold out" in main display.  As I had just maxed it out two days earlier, sold out was not likely.  So I go in Saturday morning and swap out the coin mech and everything works fine through about six test vends.  Last night I get a call that it has not worked for the last two days so I go back out this morning feeling not too confident in my ability to fix whatever's wrong.  I go into the error codes and get "hs" which stands for home sensor which is not mentioned in the manual btw.  I reset the control board and now the machine works fine which in itself is a double edged sword.  While I'm glad it's working I'd really like to know how I fixed it (assuming it is fixed).  These deals always make me feel uneasy - like I'm about to get snake bit.

I know the feeling, seems like no matter how many test vends that you do, somehow the minute that you leave is when a problem is going to happen haha. I've had pretty good luck lately though (knock on wood!!)

A home sensor error means that it controller did not see the magnet on the chain return to the home position. Can be caused by several conditions, chain off track, off guide, jam by hanging bottle, etc. Once the error is there it must be cleared even if the problem was caused by a temporary condition. So if its working now you should be good to go, I would suggest a careful examination of the chain in operation during test vends to look for anything out of place or missing. Mainly tensioner springs and roller guides.

Thanks Mike,

I suppose this means I'll have to squat down and look up under there next time I'm out.  At my age I may get stuck down there  ;D

Unless your 81 going on old age, no reason for getting stuck down there!  ;D

I have a tendency to throw my back out when getting in awkward places.  Last time I did it I was in an attic - couldn't walk upright for three weeks (can't afford any more of that)

Well, I got my new flanges from AZ today and there's a significant difference between the new ones and the old warped ones.  Now if I could only figure out to reinstall that rear spring and the E clip that holds it in - I can already tell this is not something you'd want to tackle onsite.

After the threaded stud is slid into the flange then on the inside of the door you will slide onto the flange in this order, the spring, the flat washer and then while applying pressure against the washer, install the retaining clip into a slot in the threaded stud.

As so often happens in these cases the quick fix doesn't work - called a tech out today, Nick Martinez, who knows Royals very well.  Took him about two seconds to realize that one of the wheel guides for the chain was missing.  Will get it fixed tomorrow and report the progress.  The irony here is because the Royals are so dependable, I don't have much experience fixing them in a pinch the way I can with the damned Vendos that seem to be always needing something.

Success!!  After installing the new wheel, machine is working like champ again.  Apparently the dogs won't trigger if the chain is sagging.

Dogs on a chain?

maybe that is what is wrong with my Royal need to walk them dogs!  ;D

Going pick up a Royal 650 live front Monday, I thought it was cheap!  Four big ones.

That's a Merlin IV - no chain drive and four bills is a great price
