Honor Box Startup

So I have been lurking for a while and researching and have come up with this plan...

25 Full size honor boxes with no graphics, dividers and shippers.

I will place custom printed vinyl graphics and create a domain to promote on the boxes.

I plan to build my route on the weekend and I hope to place 4 boxes per week.

In the end I hope to get a 200 box route then expand into bulk/full line.

There are tons of useful threads at this link http://vendiscuss.net/index.php?/forum/17-locating-discussions/ you should find something there that will help you locate on Saturday. Especially in a larger city. Also you can download more useful information at this link. http://vendiscuss.net/index.php?/files/category/8-ebooks-manuals-periodicals/ I hope that helps. Happy hunting! :)

Any good tips for self locating on a Saturday in a big city?

I don't do snack honor boxes but if I did I would contact this member Dennis23 that has a huge snack honor box business. I don't think he would mind if you PM'd him just to pick his brain about the subject.

Thanks for all the info folks. I searched a lot and didn't find anything specific to Saturday locating. Moving on.

My budget for this attempt at growing a route is:

$30-50 weekly from a single head selling pmm+mechanical full line combo at my day job. 5 can drink 9 snack, Bought it off CL for $200 and added another mechanical snack for $85. (sucks but I'm here to monitor it).

I will add $100 for 5 weeks.

So let's call it $135

I bought a domain for $13 and added to an existing hosting plan so only expense is that yearly fee.

Sheridan wants 120ish + 40 s/h for 25 box/divider/sleeve set ups (without graphics).

This put me over budget from the start so now I have to wait for Monday pull to place this order.

135

-13

= 122 (need 160 for my box order)

This is where I stand. I will finish the website and work on custom graphic/branding concept for the boxes while I wait for budget to catch up.

make sure to post your site ;)

if you call sheridan they will do lower orders of 10-20 so you can buy right away to get started.

Good advice but I am going to stick with the 25 start up plan.

I figure with my budget I can get all in play after 8/9 weeks.

I find when I hurry into any business things have a way of slowing you down anyhow.

I will post the domain when I have finalized it.

This is the outfit I bought on CL $200 for the combo on left and $85 for one on the right.

This was overkill and what lead me to the snack box idea. I am going to downsize to the soda machine only with an honor box on top.

Maybe a triple for bulk.

I am kind of second guessing the decision to buy Sheridan's honor box without graphics.

The custom graphics may cost as much as $10-12 per unit, a huge cost.

I am now thinking I should spend the extra $2 per box with the printed graphics and at least there  will be something on the boxes if my custom solution is too expensive or takes too long, it's an extra $40 on the order of 25 boxes.

Any opinions?

I would start with the printed boxes from Sheridan. Place 25 or 50 of those. Once they are on location for 1-2 months, you will have some decent revenue coming in. At that time, if you want to get creative and spend a few extra sheckels on custom graphics, go for it.

When starting out on a budget, the most important thing to do is to begin bringing in revenue. Good luck!

  • 1 month later...

Haven't given up on this but I have been finding some good deals on old bulk equipment at the moment so I have postponed this project until I place what I have.

Will keep you guys updated

I do full-line and snack boxes.  I have a few accounts that I actually replaced the cardboard honor boxes (been used for several years) with plastic see-through totes from Walmart.  Sure, the totes cost a little more... but these were for existing customers that didn't give two craps about graphics and all of that.  They know the routine and the tote holds 2-3 times more than the large cardboard honor boxes do.  I collect roughly $40 every 2 weeks from 2 different accounts and I would say my shortage is roughly 10% on average at those locations.

The only reason I did this was because these locations are DIRTY and DUSTY.  Mice were getting at one of the boxes and eating everything and the other location is near a grinding machine and a furnace that gives off some sort of dust.  Now, their snacks are never dirty and no rodent issues as the totes have lids.

It's just an idea, but it only works at locations where people know what they are supposed to pay.
