mojorhino
Whats the official name of this stuff? Its used to seal air leaks. It's like clay except for it never dries up. Where can I get some? I've checked Lowes, Home Depot, & Lock Electric (Heating & Cooling warehouse) but nobody knows what it's called. I've also asked on of my Pepsi repair techs & was told that Pepsi used to supply it to them but is no longer doing so & he can't remember the name of it anymore. AZVendor
The plumbers putty won't work for long on the back of the USI CD6 that he showed. Plumbers putty will harden over time and break off, creating an air leak. I use the plumbers putty only where the lines come into a DN, Vendo or Royal cabinet and aren't generally disturbed. The USI CD6 requires a lot of mastic to seal the massive area where the flexible umbilical harness enters the back of the cooling unit. There is a product called Thum-gum made by Bramec that works for this. I also have a different brand at my shop but I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head. Walta
Most refrigation supply houses will stock some brand of gum. Plumers puddy is a poor subdutute as it will harden. I have made 1 purchace from Skygeek every thing was as expected. http://www.skygeek.com/virginia-kmp-pp-22-permagum-sealing-gum.html?utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=shoppingengine&utm_content=virginia-kmp-pp-22-permagum-sealing-gum&utm_campaign=froogle&gclid=CjwKEAjw456hBRDQ4eqg8MzA2W0SJABI2gJ8nJLO3z2JErrw8i6w9oNlZjyZcYEUjc2mKrQkM-JUzBoCW8nw_wcB http://www.grainger.com/product/Sealing-Gum-4PDF4?s_pp=false&picUrl=//static.grainger.com/rp/s/is/image/Grainger/4PDF4_AS01?$smthumb$ Walta

mojorhino
After multiple trips to Home Depot, Locke Supply Co.& Lowes, I was told numerous times by multiple associates that they didn't carry anything like what I was talking about other than plumbers putty , so I bought the plumbers putty for around 2 to 3$ & went home & started searching Google for where to get this this elusive refrigeration putty locally. . . . . What I found was, the best term to search for is "sealing gum". After researching "sealing gum" I found that it comes in two basic forms bricks & chords. The bricks are also called plugs or slugs depending on the manufacture & the chords are just the sealing gum rolled into long strips with a separator/backing that keeps the strips from sticking together in the roll. After actually being able to consistently find what I was looking for: DiversaGum Duct Seal Bostic 5250 Sealing Strip Thumb-Tite Sealing Gum PermaGum Thum-Gum I went back to Locke Supply Co. & all three of their departments (plumbing, heating & air & electrical) still told me they didn't have anything like it & nothing like it was even in their catalog . Finally, I went back to Lowes & looked in the electrical department (where all the wiring & cords were) & started looking for this elusive refrigeration putty/sealing gum but could not find it. Luckily this time one of their associates who was formally an electrician knew what I was talking about & took me right to it. It was barely over $2 with tax. After that I went home & searched & found out that both Home Depot & Lock Electric Co. do carry it It is in the Locke Supply Co. catalog (on page 616) You can find it on Home Depot's web site by searching for "Duct Seal" You can find it on Lowe's web site by also searching for "Duct Seal"
Hillbilly
I wish I would have seen this earlier. I could have helped you out. This was also the case in the heavy duty truck parts business. Everybody wanted it but nobody knew exactly what it was. We called it "black sticky golpher" and it was carried in our air conditioning line. Sold a bunch of it.
