Hi all well I recently ordered 50 of the ribbon boxes and got 32 of them placed so far in two days. Most of them were resuturants but a few aren't and wondered what your experiences have been with these type places:

-auto repair shops

-salons

-Pot shop

-ice cream place

-donught shop

-dentist

wondering if anyone has had any luck with any of these or if im wasting my time with them when locating

im selling mints if that makes a diffrence

I have had about 6 or 7 auto places in the past year.  Most of them were busy auto shops but two of them were very slow.  The slow ones weren't worth anything even if the money was good.  The fast-moving ones were hit or miss.  I sold a lot in most of the busy auto shops but that was made up for with high shortage rates.  I used this auto places to get rid of my short-dated items.  One of these customers complained about how my chips only had about 2 weeks date left on them every time.  I then complained that the money was about 35% short every time.  We had our dispute and I took the box out at that location.  With that said.. auto shops can be good but shortages can be a problem.

I haven't had any salons but I would worry about shortages.  It seems like there would be too many part-timers coming and going that would gladly grab a snack without paying for it and then deny it altogether once the question comes up "Do you owe the box?"

There are no [legal] pot store here in Ohio.

I haven't done any ice cream or donut places.

I have gone through a few dental places.  They are extremely funny (and I mean that in an odd sense) when it comes to how the sales do. Out of 4 dental offices, 3 were pretty slow (I still have one of the slow ones because the money is always good) and one was busy.  I ended up pulling 1 slow one for shortages, 1 slow one for lack of sales, and the good one because the manager left a note saying "We would like the box to be pulled because we are having an issue paying for the snacks."  That message was odd because I didn't tell her that I had a problem with the shortages in recent memory (she "threatened" to have me pull the box if it came up short 3 months before this happened... thanks... as if I am the bad guy).

In the end.. I will tell you that dental offices generally aren't worth it... but if they are.. they want chocolate stuff for the women.

I will tell anyone this... women can be the most difficult people to deal with when it comes to honor boxes.  Many of them have this mind set that everything must be on sale or it's not a good deal... and selling a 2 oz. bag of chips for $1 is not a good deal.  It's silly stuff because it's like hey... I am running a business.  Then, they will want chocolate stuff.  You put chocolate stuff in there, then they complain because there's no salty stuff.  You put salty stuff in there and then they complain that there's not ONE SPECIFIC ITEM that they want.  Then they complain because they haven't complained in a while and they are due to give some complaints.  I have one office with about 10 women and they COMPLAIN COMPLAIN COMPLAIN.  I want to pull the box but they are now paying 100% of shortages because I told them I would ONLY give them candy bars if the money was perfect every time... so I have 0% shortage and they probably buy $25 worth of stuff every other week.

Sorry for the rant.

Hahahahaha

Don't try to understand women, women understand women and they hate each other.

I especially liked the part where they complain because they haven't complained in a while and complaint is due.   Good hell, you'd think they'd save themselves money and frustration and bring their own snacks to the office.....

Believe me.  I am the first guy to throw up the white flag and surrender when someone asks me to try to understand women.

Ya they seemed to go out pretty easy got 14 out first day in 3 hours and 18 out next in 5 hours. I plan on checking them all in 2 weeks.

Ya even if some of them are slow I may keep them just cause most are pretty close together so as long as I don't have bad shortages with them should still be alright since already there.

Ya guess we'll see how the pot shop does only tried one since it was close if does well I'll go to the others.. Would think it would do ok as long as not to much theft from people bein hi just wanting a munchie.. Lol

I also ran into a few places that already had a candy honor box but totally diffrent kinda box and candy. What do you guys think about that situation? Having 2 peoples honor boxes same location.

Might have an impact on your overall sales just because someone might only have enough to choose from either box.. but I wouldn't put too much thought into it really.. especially if it's something that doesn't sell very well

  • 1 month later...

hey evolution 84, can you give an update on how your boxes are doing? Have you had any places kick you out yet?

I ordered 50 boxes as well and have only placed 8, due to being busy. I already had one location kick me out and told me to never come back, in a rather nasty tone. Have no idea why. Just picked up the box and left.

I'm not giving up but I'm already frustrated with the business. Things like that can really get to you.

Hi there. ya I currently have about 32 boxes out as ive been lazy to go out farther than a few miles from my house. plus I work a full time job so just do this on the side and run the route once every two weeks a few locations I have to do weekly though. I have been kicked out of places but never rudely... just usually sometimes a manager says yes than the owner decided they don't wanna do it. ive probably been asked to pick up my box by about 8 locations about half just mentioned it when went to change box and I usually just drive down the street a bit and just get same box back out. Ive also pulled probably 5 boxes just cause either to slow or theft was to high. but its been working out pretty decent for me. with checking the boxes every two weeks I usually collect about $150- $200 although most of it comes from my best locations my others only make me a couple to few bucks every 2 weeks. so after candy cost and stuff make like 100-150 profit every 2 weeks and take me about 2 hours to go to all locations. so not bad for 2 hours work. so in other words not gonna make rich but gives a little extra spending money.

Thanks for that reply. Lots of good info. $150-200 every 2 weeks is not bad at all. The only thing that sucks is that I'm not good wih locating to begin with, so having to relocate boxes every couple of weeks would be a pain for me. What kind of candy do you use? I use york patties but they are $15 for 175 pieces. I split 175 between 3 boxes, so basically I spend $120 on candy for every 25 boxes. Does that seem normal?

ya i use york's there $13 a box here at costco. I put 50 per box unless it a busy location than I do 75.

locating your best sticking to non franchise places, i like pizza places and asian/vietmanese places seem to do good for me. try auto repair places they do ok too. But i do actully have a few franchise places that took a box so never really know.

I put 100 York's in each box. I only do restaurants. I try and run them every 30 days but a lot of mine have to be run every 2 weeks. Usually there are only a few mints left if any. I have several franchise places that would not let me put a bulk machine. They all do good. I have 1 franchise business that I stuff all I can in it, 130 mints. I have to run it every week.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to jump on this post real quick to ask a question since I'm starting out with my first 50 next week. What is better to place in the boxes; York patties or lollipops? If you can please let me know why you think its a better choice.

Thanks Trevor

How do you guys deal with shrinkage. I have a place (a diner)that literally only had 75 cents in the box and every single piece of candy was gone. I just gave them a new box, but if this second box ends up like the first one, I gotta pull the box out of there. How do you nicely tell them that they are thieves?

Just tell them thanks for the business but you must remove box due to no one paying for candy. Don't lose any sleep over it just move on.
