need help on impulse buy

So I'm new to the forum and vending in general. Today has been my first day conducting any research in the business of vending. This forum has been extremely helpful in gaining knowledge. I came across a u turn 8 head machine selling for $100 and was wondering if this was a fair price for a used machine in good shape and whether this is a good investment as my first machine bought.

Uturns don't hold up. You will go through coin mech's quickly, there is too many ways to cheat them, and you will tie up 8 products and make just as much with 2. You will waste more product dialing in the 8 select then you will making money. I've had them for 12+ years and it was a learning experience that I wish I didn't wait so long to learn that.

spend the 100 on a double head, and then put it out to make money!

Welcome!  My feedback probably isn't what you want to hear but there's stages of learning and experience you haven't gone through yet.  There is no do it yourself small business that's easier to do wrong than bulk vending.  In my opinion it's because you only need to read a few basic articles for an hour or two before you feel like you've got the jist and you're ready to roll. The more you read however, you begin to realize there's a whole world of choices to make in terms of what type of vending you're going to do, how you'll market your service, pitch locations and structure your business, whether you'll do charity or commission or both, there's a ton of machine manufacturers and toy/plush/candy/gumball/interactive distributors.  Who you do business with and how you set up your operation will go a LONG way toward determining your success or failure.  I might be underestimating the amount of research you've done, but it's always a red flag when somebody's first post is about equipment rather than process.  The best thing you can do if you're REALLY serious about long term business success is put the credit card back in your wallet and keep reading.  For at least a month.  Awesome username by the way lol!

No.

That's not a good investment.

Spend less time shopping around for your first machine and more time reading through the pages of this forum.

After doing so, you will have a general idea of what a good price is for used equipment.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, you will also know what equipment you should avoid.

Some equipment isn't even worth taking for FREE.

Sometimes the best advise won't even be posted, it will come as a private message. There have been cases where people giving a negative review of a really over priced and/or not very good or useful machine in here have faced legal action.

Pretty much. In 7 years, I haven't had one go much farther than a threatening letter from a lawyer. My favorite was the one who sent me a summons to appear in court. I called the court to verify but it was bogus.

The letters are quite entertaining and I enjoy getting them. I keep them in a scrapbook.

that's crazy! I could understand litigation if someone was spamming every thread... The great thing about the vend discuss forum is that it gives the victim a voice. (Leverage). If the accusations are public, the "accused" also has the opportunity to make the reconciliation public to the same audience. It means a lot to me to see a manufacture or supplier bend over backwards to correct a mistake. I am on the wrong end of supplier mistakes all of the time! I don't see why anyone would get lawyers involved?

Just do a double or a 4 way rack. Those two setups are usually the best bang for the buck. I usually use doubles as pawns to scout out a location's revenue potential and then swap in a 4 way rack; unless I think the place would support a 6, 8, or 10 head rack (most places will not; 4 is usually a pretty good fit for most places).

Steve, you are shielded from legal action because you are not responsible for the things posters write. The posters themselves are not. And I repeat what I said, sometimes, even if you are telling the truth you are threatened in a very real, very personal, very expensive way. Even if you can prevail in court a person with enough money can (and will if they are vindictive) ruin you financially.

There are others here that know exactly who and what I am taking about.

Yea, lots of craziness out there.  A few come to mind that I read about...

Lady was sued by owner of contracting company after leaving a bad review on Angie's List.

A buyer was sued by the seller for leaving negative feedback on eBay.

I was personally threatened (10 years ago) with a law suit by a locator if I posted about him on the web after a bad experience and bad words between us.

Kinda sucks.

Make You Wanna Holler!
