vendor 821 & 24oz Pepsi problems

I have a vendo 821 that will sell a number of 24oz pepsi's without problem, then it will vend one and drop a second unpaid pepsi a few seconds later. After dropping the second soda it then displays "sold out" when that selection is tried.

Column depth is set at double depth

Vends have been tried with the step slide set completely in and all the way out. Without avail.

I've tried stacking the sodas butt to butt as well as cap to butt.

Vend motor seems to work fine.

There is only one column of Pepsi in the machine.

I'm out of ideas.

What am I missing?

While not recommended, did you try cap to cap?  Did you verify that the depth is programmed for 2 for that column?  You might also try the "learning mode" (dL) within the Options menu (OPtS) which can overcome some incorrect settings.  It's too bad that Vendo hasn't issued any setup guides for these machines.  Apparently they think the V21 setup is goof proof and there's no need for testing any products so that a setup guide could be published.

This is odd. My 721 has no problems with pepsi products. When coke was available in 24 oz here, they barely fit but I never had a problem.

I don't know why it says sold out though. Can you just try exchanging that selection wiyh another column? It may just be a weird mechanical fluke in that column. It would save a lot of headaches to go that route rather than hunt for gremlins.

I have a few vendo 721 ( latest model).....it vends 2-3 Pepsi 240z bottles and then says "sold out". I called George at Vendo tech support. He said it could be,

1) depth setting

2) bad board

3) drop sensor not working correctly

4) black can/bottle slider

I have tried all of these, nothing!

This is a slow week for me, I am going to place the 24oz pepsi in column number 1 and see what happens. It seems column 6 seems to be a problem.  I have a funny feeling, 2 columns of 24oz bottles beside each other leads to problems. I vend coke 24oz and never have/had any problems. Perplexing problem. I know the vendo 540, 840 and 720 have no known problems vending 2 deep 24ouncers! Thank god for the old stuff!

That's crazy when you consider that the 24 oz coke bottles are longer than the pepsi.  You would think that the coke products would jam before any coke products.  Maybe you are onto something regarding having two selections side-by-side with 24oz bottles.  I have two columns side by side and I have no issues... in fact, I have never had a problem vending 24 oz bottles but my 721 is over 4 years old.  Maybe they made some sort of an "improvement" to the 721s that caused them to be less reliable with 24 oz.

By the way, I was unaware of this, but you are telling me that a vendo 720 can vend 24 oz bottles two-deep as well?  Does it also sell 12 oz cans 4-deep?

Yes sir, the vendo 720, 840, 540 are the models I use. They all vend 24oz 2 deep even mixed with 20ounce bottles and  4 deep-12oz cans in the same machine. In fact I just bought 20 used vendo 720s. I am going back to the V max series. In order to vend 4 deep cans I install a specific "can chute" from vendo  ($30) and fresh gauge bars, never had a problem!

I am very surprised in the vendo 721, 821 series,  the 24oz pepsi bottles, drop 1-3 and then read sold out....WTF!

The 720, 840 and 540 vend 2 deep 240z bottles, just snip about 6.5inches off the bottom of the back spacer. No clips or spacers required!

Thank you for that info Chris.  I currently operate two 720's and two V21's.  If it weren't for the difficulty that I experience (sometimes) getting parts from Vendo, I would have way more of them.  I just wonder if the 24oz bottles in Canada are shaped differently than the ones here in the states.  I just don't see how people can have so many problems with the 24oz bottles on the V21's but not the 720's... nor do I understand why I have no issues vending 24oz bottles out of my 721.  Clearly it isn't logical to assume that the problem here is that you are Canadian, even though that was my first idea.  My second idea was that having a C, h, and an r in your screen name potentially caused some kind of problem with your V21, but then I couldn't figure out why I wasn't having issues.  Perhaps we should blame North Korea for this.  Have you been talking poorly of the Dear Leader?

Buy your parts from Vendors exchange! I see your in Ohio, vendors exchange is in Cleveland. The bottle shape is the same in Canada as  it is in the USA.

I will trouble shoot the V21 live display next week and back to this forum. I will give vendo tech support a call and see if the "DL" setting can help out.

Yeah, the old 540, 720 and 840 series are the best!

I don't believe VE had the motor harness that I needed.  It had to be purchased directly from Vendo if I remember correctly.

The 720's are great for bottles, but I've always ran cans 3 deep. I didn't know they had a can chute. I have noticed gauge bars bending easily although only with cans. I've probably bent at least three gauge bars this year in different 720's.

Also this Vendor 821 does have the black bottle sliders. Is there a different one available for bottles?

  • 2 weeks later...

I wanted to post an update.  Roger replaced the drop sensor on the tray and I have not had a re-occurrence of the double vend or the sold out message.  I want to wait until after the holidays before I am certain that this did the trick.

This also caused me to consider that there might have been a poor connection as opposed to a failing sensor since the problem seemed to be somewhat intermittent.

A faulty sensor is the only thing that makes any sense assuming the board is working.
