Mint Boxes

Hi Everyone,

I am new here, and have gone through and read most if not all of the posts I could find on mint honor boxes.  I am currently working with Rodney69 on getting started, but I have some questions.  Some of the posts are older, so I was wondering if anyone could chime in with some info on how you are doing with your boxes, how much you make on average (I know location is important), etc... Any info or advoce would be great.  I'm starting very small (10 or 12).  I've actually been told not to bother with that few because there is not way I could make money with that amount.  How do you feel about that?  If the boxes are making a profit and are relatively close to each other, I don't see why starting small is a problem.  Thanks for your help!

I don't run but a select few honor boxes but IMO if you can make any money at anything then do it.  You can make money on that many locations but not serious money.

You CAN make money on 10-12 boxes very easily. It all comes down to location...

Now, heres the thing....just because you secure a good location, it DOES NOT mean that you will make money. You need a good location QND you need good placement in the good location. I have had mint boxes go from $30 per month down to $4 per month simply because it was moved further down the counter.

Start small, keep an eye on inventory, keep an eye on shrinkage, read, learn, and ask questions.

Best of luck!

I agree with Grazing Hippo. Just because its a good location doesn't mean it will do good. I have one at a Hooters. Its by the front door and is one of my worse locations as far as shrinkage. I fill it with 100 mints every week and it always empty. Its been there about 3 or 4 weeks and it has between $10 and maybe $14 a week. Looks like I may have to pull it.

I started small and I just keep ordering more boxes with the profits every week or two. I'm up to about 70 boxes and need to order more now. Don't forget you have to have extra boxes to swap out. If not, it is a real pain to try and do it in the van as you pick up and fill for next location.

I am getting the coated cardboard, but I will get twenty because I understand that swapping them out is easier.  I have to make a choice between going with Pink Ribbon or Vend2help.  Any opinions on this?  Thanks for all the advice and help!

I use both as well. The cardboard ones look nice and are great for expanding but they do wear ouT. The coin slot takes a beating. I recommend reinforcing it with tape underneath. I like the acrylic ones best. They look very nice and don't wear out as quickly. One thing I found with those though is the edges can be a little sharp. I cut my hands several times

As far as locations go, if you can get it on the counter by the register in a restaurant then you are good to go. Other locations that do well for me are hotels, vape stores ( lot of people hang out in those) also busy nail places can do ok. Car dealerships in the service area

If you can afford it, get the acrylics. They are much better.

I have mostly pink ribbon boxes. People will vandalize them, they will get wet when left next to a plant, people spill coffee on them, your money will be stolen more often....etc.

The nice thing about the pink ribbon boxes is the marketing. They are easy to place and really stand out. They are great for offices where peolle are clean. They are also about 1/4 the price of acrylics so if a box is stolen ot damaged, its not the end of the world.

If money is a little tight AND you are not certain how long you will be in this business, buy pink ribbon. If you have enough money to buy acrylics and you think you may do this for a long time, buy acrylics. I really dont think there is a right or wrong answer to which type to start with. You should make money either way.

I get the Acrylic ones from Sheridan. Shipping and all costs me $345 for 16 boxes. That's about $21.56 a box. Most locations you will make that back in a month. Its hard for me to give an average because I have 4 that I have to put 100 mints in every week. A bunch that I run every 2 weeks then some that are once a month. I run them like my bulk machines. If they have at least 50 mints in them I add a week to the next service. I'm not as organized as some on here. I just go to where I feel they need filling.

Lake cities...

How long have you had your locations? I have about 220. Just got 200 recently. I have some really great locationS. A few that run out every 3-4 days. One thing that I'm curious of though is how long business owners let you keep it there. I have some that are at about 6 months but I've also lost quite a few along the way

You are way ahead of me, I just started the mint boxes about 3 or 4 months ago. Two of the locations that i mention weekly I actually fill twice a week, Monday and Friday. They are usually empty.

Sheridan will set you up with the Susan G Komen Pink Ribbon charity. You do have to pay a monthly fee for the stickers.

They're the Susan G Komen stickers? Or just the pink ribbon stickers?

Okay, thanks everyone.  So, I have now decided to invest in some acrylic boxes, but also some cardboard, because I can't afford all acrylic at this time, but I will work my way up, hopefully.  I don't like the idea of having the money just sitting in a cardboard box that can easily be broken in to.  But, I know all of these types of boxes, including acrylic can be tampered with.  I just like that the acrylic has a lock on it and it looks more professional and official. I am going for all restaurants for the placement (Rodney69 will be doing this for me).  I think what FrCorey is saying is that private companies with the same employees each day lends itself to more theft?  I expect some theft, and as I have read from all of you helpful people, you all have some degree of it, but I have read in the various posts how to lessen it.  I understand I may have to adjust some locations, etc....    Do all of you do the "switch out" thing with your boxes when you go to service?  Again, thanks for all of your support and responses.  I feel more educated going into this, and I'm sure I will learn more once I start.

ccdonations makes a donation to komen but the label they provide is not a komen label. Its their Own. Be careful when explaining this to business owners because the pink box and the pink sticker they give are not officially Komen, however that is where they donate what is collected.

Verdigirl, the pink boxes have holes in them that allows you to put a zip tie in them. You can buy a big bag at home depot. I recommend it. I think you will like the acrylic ones better. I always feel better walking iN a location with one of those more than the cardboard. Plus the dollar bills are always nicer haha. They get folded up and smashed up pretty good in the cardboard boxes. No big deal though

Also to answer your question I think almost everyone just swaps out. It's so much easier that way. Swap and label it so when you get home you know which is which. Then I usually count my mints that are left. I put 100 in each box. So then I calculate how many mints were sold by subtracting the mints that are left from 100. Then I multiply the amt of mints sold by .07 to determine cost of goods sold. Then I count my money. Then subtract costs of goods sold from total collected to see my profit for the box. As long as I make $4 profit a month I keep the location But if its around the $4 I will only keep it if it's close to others I have. Many boxes profit between 10-20 a month
