vending mike and ikes

I'm thinking about ditching them and running at least hard shell. It sells 9lbs a month of m&I.

Giving 10-11 pieces per vend.

But, like you said, to many issues. That's why I'm trying to figure if it's possible

I tried them in a Beaver machine a couple of years ago and it was horrible. They all stuck together. I sold enough to make my money back and then took them out and gave them to the Grandkids. I recently took over a route that had Hot tamales, Mike and Ike and Jelly belly and every canister that had them in there had been hit and cracked. I have finally got rid of all of them and am replacing them with hard candy. I tried the pam and wooden spoon with no luck.

I vend them in multiple machines with no problems. Uturns, Beavers, AA

Also i sell ALOT of PMMS. Even tho the margins are not massive, i still do well with next to no spoilage. Cant keep those in my machines!

M&I and Hot Tamales are ok, just cant have them in humid conditions. So in factories they are a winter item in the north. I have some out that are outstanding locations. Then there was that Chinese Buffet that stuck my double header of 850 gum and M&I in the south window. Gotta be careful where you put them!!

I've had then in my uturn's with minimal issues, but this location is too high volume for plastic mechs, period.

Lately, the Mike and ikes have been jamming up.

I'm changing the equipment out to oak 450, northwestern or AA? Just trying to figure out which one will work best with that candy, but if it's going to cause issues, I can't take a chance with the location.

I have a hunch the difference is the plastic vs. metal and you'll find you have the same problem with all machines with metal wheels.  I think your choice is to:

1) use a U-Turn, vendstar, Seaga, etc.

2) coat with Pam or

3) ditch the M&I

Given the fact that it's a high volume spot we can throw out #1.  You just have to decide if it's worth taking the time to coat them based on how well they move vs what you'd replace them with.

I think I'm just going too pull them. No matter how much they make, I don't want to lose the location over it.

Charity locations that make about 200 a month are hard to come by.

Thank you everyone!

I just placed my 1st gumball machine here in LA, Calif. and Im sooo excited!!

@ Rick- when you say SPRAY WITH PAM- do you mean spraying it with PAM spray oil? Does it affect the color and the taste?

That's ONLY if your hanging trouble vending soft chewy candy. I wouldn't do it unless absolutely necessary imo.

Only if needed with mike and Ike and hot tamales

Spray on spoon and stir a little goes a long way

Echoing what Musser said.....climate is everything when vending Hot Tamales and Mike & Ikes. I have vended these out of several types of machines with no issues. Problems arise when:

1) The location is too hot or humid.

2) Your delivery vehicle is too hot and the product gets soft or sweaty. You dump it into a machine (in an air conditioned location) while it is soft or sweaty and it congeals in minutes and becomes a brick.

3) The machine is in direct sun. Heating and cooling from day to night creates a candy brick in no time.

One thing that helps is to only fill M&I or Hot Tamales half way up in the canister. This reduces the compression factor at the bottom of the canister and helps ease the turn of the hopper.

Sort of off topic, but I found 1 pound bags of Mike and ikes at my local dollar tree. This has my Mike and ikes price cut way down from Sam's club price of $7+ for 4.5 pounds. They also sell 1 pound bags of hot tamales for a buck.

I like looking for little deals like this.

I saw in my HEB flyer M&M's 19.2oz bag buy 1 for 5.38 and get 1 free.  I pay 9.68 or 9.87 for a 56 oz bag depending on which Sams I go to.  If I am doing my math correctly thats about .03 less per oz. Same as getting a 56oz bag for about $2 cheaper.  I just need to inquire about limits.
