7th Location and Venturing Into Toys

Recommended Posts

Well today I installed a double at the Auto and Tire shop. While I was there I asked about their other location and got the green light. Apparently, there was  a single gumball supporting Jerry's Kids but was never filled and abandoned. So I will put a single gumball there. Also, I asked about adding a third head to my first location and will vend bouncy balls. This will be my first toy location so I am excited since I don't have to worry about the bouncy balls going bad! I feel like I am Dan Aykroyd listening to James Brown saying "Do you see the light!!!" B) in Blues Brothers ha ha. I hope to get more but might be more difficult for me, I don't know of too many places kids frequent that doesn't have one!

I see your posts all over, you're expanding quickly! Just don't get ahead of yourself haha, I can't talk because I have no experience though.

You seem to get lucky with finding spots though, were you in for service or just happen to stop by to see if they'd let you place one on location?

Anyway congrats on the locations.

Well thank you, it just happens though. Haha I don't know if I call it luck, I am in Marketing and when I go out in my local area and do my rounds, I scout out possible locations and just go and ask. I've just been lucky I've gotten very few no's.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do in marketing? Like I said I'm pretty new to vending, by pretty new I mean I haven't made the leap yet, until I separate from the military next year. Then I plan on making the dive into it. Just trying to see what everyone does, and how everyone works their primary job/vending route.

I go out and try to have companies in my area become employee groups at the Credit Union I work at. Also, create more community awareness about who we are and what we offer. Well I have definitely enjoyed it so far and have learned a lot on here. I just started in May.

If you don't mind me asking, do you guys do threads on how you started or anything? Looking for some beginner insite/how to get started. I'd also like to find a  mentor. Not looking for someone big, because I doubt I'll ever get that big haha. I just want to get into it as a hobby to see how I do and to see if I like it.

There is a thread somewhere on here where a lot of people talk about how they got started. I am sure someone on here would help you out who is more experienced. Just ask questions and you'll get answers. Everyone on here is great source of information.

Yes, the 1st thread in the bulk vending section will take weeks to read. I think its called the ultimate beginners guide??? Something like that.

I was more so asking about personal stories on getting started. I wanted to follow people coming up and stuff. I've been going in and out on that guide. Just running around trying to talk to people, get their input.

How did the toys work out? I am very interested in toys actually that's the only thing that I want to do. Can you give me some tips?

I've been dabbling with the bulk machines for about 15 years, I had a pretty big route (at least for me) I had 63.  Then I got out of it, and have started back seriously with bulk and snack boxes.  I have 21 bulk and 21 snack boxes.  I am doing it full time now, so I will be glad to help any way I can.

You make a living on 21 bulk machines and 21 steal a snacks?

LOL, no I don't make a living on it, when i lost my job, i got some of my 401k and paid off almost all my bills and my wife has a good paying job and she supports me on this venture while i build it.  I also have a nursing home location that brings in about 300.00 a week that helps also

A nursing home is a goldmine with the right stuff. Nice going!

Just curious guys, what would you vend in a nursing home since they are senior citizens and probably don't have many original teeth lol or are you focusing on their families who come visit?

That type of thinking is exactly why some do so well. Don't close your mind to an idea until you try it.

I have one exclusively for the tenants and it does as much as any of my other avg, tho above avg locations.

At a nursing home, you want to go after the people working there. Nurses, aids, and other staff are coming and going at all hours of the day and night, and they cannot leave until their shift is out. Soda and snack units do great, as have triples or other candy setups.

If you're doing bulk, avoid anything with nuts, and cycle (or ask) until you find out what the staff like. My biggest winners were Mike and Ikes and Good and Plenty, if you can believe it. One regular with a sweet tooth is all it takes to make a killer location.

Ahh I gotcha, I didn't even think of it from that angle. It's been an extremely long day haha. Well if it is geared to the staff, would you ask to put it in the lobby or a break room/ cafeteria? Hopefully to catch the families that come in but they might not want one of the patients to possibly get a piece of candy if it's in the lobby.

The first place I got specified an alcove in the back hallway, which I was bummed about at first (at the time I was going for visiting families, etc), then I found out that the employees would darn near run the thing out on a regular basis, so I pursued the other care facilites their company owned. The second and third place had me put the machines in their break rooms, as they were newer facilities with dedicated break rooms, and they did about the same as the first machine, a solid $45-70 on a 60 day cycle. When it comes to facilities like that, I've found whoever has OK'ed the placement will have a spot cooked up for you. I've never had the luxury of suggesting a spot with those sort of places, though that might just be the places I'm working with too.

That's awesome! I would of been bummed too like I was at my hotel location, by the information rack which just sounds unappealing but it did $7.75 in 10 days! I know it's not much to a lot of you but for me it is since I am just starting out lol. Needless to say I was happy it was there. I will definitely have to try out my local nursing home as I know the manager of it from my work since I have helped her a lot with her account. I hope she takes that into consideration when I ask haha.

Hi bane train. Hey I wanted to ask a question.(no need to give me any names) was your tire shop a local one or national chain? Just like I said in another post that you are in. I have 2 national chain customers. I picked them up from a route I purchased though.

Hey no need to beat yourself up over 7.75.that's pretty awesome in 10 days. Gum is pretty awesome. I have a double in a antique shop. They even put a large plastic roadrunner spiral machine right next to mine, and it still does good. I have toys on the other head and had to change product because that seems to be dead.

Jerry, it is a local chain. I was fortunate enough to talk to directly to the owner and ask his permission when I went in there. When I went in the other day they asked me how the vending business was going and when I am going to install my other machine which I will today in about 30 minutes on my break.

Thank you! Yeah not bad at all for a 2 star hotel, maybe someone over there is hooked on my gumballs ha ha. That's good it does, I am excited to see how bouncy balls will do in the hotel! It will be one of my first two toy locations!

Wanted to ask another question about the old folks homes. Wanted to know what type of angle you would use there, because it seems to me they would use the rebuttal about"there's no kids here" type of excuse.so I was just wondering if anyone ran into that type of excuse or not?and how did you handle it?
