Skittles Bombed At Location

So I went to my first location which has a Gumball and Skittles Head. On my first visit after 2 weeks gumballs was a bust and skittles did $11.00. On my next visit, Gumballs beat Skittles but still had a good return. I go today gumballs did well again but Skittles was a huge bust $0.75 for just over 3 weeks. I don't understand how it started out strong but now is a bust. They still taste great too! Maybe it will turn around or do I just need to make the location a single gumball?

Yea so far for me, just like statistics show, my peanut m&m's out sell my skittles almost 3:1. Which i'm surprised at because I could see myself eating skittles way more than peanut m&m's.

You mentioned two weeks for the first visit, another visit, then three weeks before the third visit. I suggest you have not given them enough time. Reading around here it sounds like any product can have a bad month, or a bad season. Long-term thinking is necessary, lest you change product too frequently and lose sales, or spend too much on new flavors, or lose product to spoilage.

I had a similar experience with peanut M&Ms. (See http://vendiscuss.net/index.php?/topic/23277-investments-and-returns-or-two-fistfuls-of-quarters/). In my haste I ended up changing out a good seller. It's a good thing I have a second location in the works, or my PMM could go bad waiting for their replacement to sell out.

If you've paid close attention you have noticed I am also new to the game, so keep that in mind when weighing my opinion against some of the others around here.

Yeah, I do ok with PMM but only have one location. 

It really depends on your region and the location's makeup. Candy is especially finicky, as you have to experiment a bit to get each location just right.

Would you leave it the way it is for a few months and see if it picks back up?

Yeah, I try to go once month right now but wanted to check on it after 3 weeks. I waited 2 weeks for my first visit, then a month and this time I waited 3. I think I will give it a few more months before I make a hasty decision.

And check your machine to be sure its vending the proper amount of skittles. It could be a case of folks trying the skittles because they like them but not coming back due to to receiving a small a portion. Even if bad portioning is the problem, you will be better off switching product just to let people know something has changed.

It's not that, it vends 12-14 skittles, which is what it should vend from everything I've seen. It's in an employee break room. I don't know what to change it to that is easy to get in my area and not too expensive.

Haha no, I am getting rid of my only Peanut M&M's head as it is too expensive and hasn't had much of a return.

If I have three "bad" cycles in a row, I pull whatever it may be and swap it out for something else. Now, my cycles vary by location from once a week for fast full-line accounts, to 60 days for some of my singles out there, so factor your time into when you pull things.

I found out that if I got a slow selling product...(such as skittles).  I swap out some bouncy balls with it for a month or so...and move the slow selling one to a faster location. Then after a month or so when bouncy balls slow down again. I  then switch skittles back in. I noticed when I bring it back, its like they are new to people again and i get more sales (at least initially).  The weird thing is the slow stuff (such as skittles) picks up again when i put it back ,because they are "new again". I use bouncy balls like McDonalds uses the McRib.... (to boost sales for a short period)  ...and boost overall sales...Even if the balls don't sell that well im not at a loss because they balls won't go stale. Plus, when you bring back the original stuff(such ask skittles) the old becomes new ...basically you create your own demand. I learned that trick when I worked for Frito lay with chip flavors rotating them around constantly to make stuff seem new(but in reality its the same thing).

Kevin, thanks for the great advice! Unfortunately, that won't work for this location as it's a break room. I wish it wasn't or I definitely would. Maybe this location had a Skittles junkie and he's no longer there. I wish it would pick up again though!

My best sales of bouncy balls was in a break room (oilfield company). I put them in (to use the strategy I mentioned above) and a few guys bought almost the whole canister of bouncy balls and filled up a guys glove box with them. When he opened it they came flooding out. (Adults like them too for a short period of time) People are bored in offices sometime! :)
