Bulk Ball Vending

WOW! That's a real gem of a find. According to what I could dig up, that's an oldschool machine built by Unique Vending Concepts- these guys made some really unqiue units back in the day. I couldn't find an exact picture of that machine, but I've got notes saying it was the precursor to the "vortex" machine. Here's a sample of their work pulled from their website:

Alas, they don't make bulk gear anymore- sticking instead with Coin Pushers and reselling existing equipment. To put it plainly, $50 is a steal for something like that. It'll take a ;arger location to hosue it, but it'll make more money than the average gumball machine, that's for sure!

I've bought some used equipment from Mark at unique vending concepts before. Good guy to deal with. He used to message me every once and awhile and ask my opinion about one of his project ideas. He was talking about making a rotary arm prize machine last time we talked. I think you right Performa it seems they definitely focusing on pushers now.

I suppose there's good money in them in the states where it's still legal to operate them. I suppose guys with a lot of those operating can afford to buy them new at whatever the price may be.

I have a machine almost exactly like that Vortex machine, but mine is called a Spiro Giro. Plays music as the balls spin around to the bottom. I don't do gumballs though, so I am thinking of selling it.

Yeah, same except decals. I should have mentioned, I'm in Australia. My model plugs into the wall. The lights weren't working, so I took them out and was going to replace with LEDs, but never got around to it. It was all gunked up with gumballs when I got it. I cleaned it out, but the gumballs are still getting stuck. I think I need to take the wheel out to clean it thoroughly, or clean the chute.

The machine is basically mechanical. The power is just for lights and sound. Some would run off battery power as far as sound goes. Some had led's that would run on battery and others had rope light that needed to be plugged in. It's been a long time since I've messed with these. I don't even have one myself. I'm guessing it has been over 15 years.  These were from a previous business partnership that didn't work out and now I'm operating as sole owner.

We're actually going to start making entertainment gumball machines again later in 2017 along with other products. Keep an eye on www.uniquevend.com

Now that is exciting news! Looking forward to what you've got in store for us in the year ahead.

Okay, adding on to this topic to keep things together rather than starting a new one:

I am trying to get the above machine working again (it was all gunked up with old gumballs when I got it), but the balls seem to be getting stuck in the wheel. I had tried gumballs, but they would get chopped in half and then stick in the chute. I have tried testing with the plastic display balls, but there is tension when you turn the wheel and then the balls jump around when you keep turning. I'm not sure if there is a particular size gumball that is needed or if it isn't set up correctly. Do I maybe need to adjust the springs? The wheel looks like a candy wheel with a rounded edge and is designed to vend 2 or 3 gumballs according to the decal on the front. I have thought of changing it with a beaver gumball wheel, but would like to keep it vending 2 balls, as the entertainment display at the front shows two balls sprialling down.

I'm pretty sure that is a 1430 ct wheel.  It's been over 15 years, so my memory isn't great on all the details and I no longer even have one of these myself. I wish I did though.  Anyway, it should vend out 1 1430 count gumball, then at the same time push up 10? seperate plastic balls to do the show. The gumball drops straight our. There is a shaft that goes back to another wheel that turns and feeds the plastic balls to the top.  I hope this makes sense, but let me know if you keep having trouble.

Also, do you have all the original plastic balls that came with it?

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the quick reply. I will need to see where I can get some 1430 ct gum (I tried previously with larger gum I got from an office supply store, but it is too soft and gets sticky quickly). This machine has a decal on the front (You may get 2 or 3 gumballs) and the riser at the front for the plastic balls generally feeds two balls to do the show. So, I'm wanting to keep it vending 2 or 3 gumballs because the mechanism is set for $1, and that is a bit steep for just one gumball.

Yes, I have the original plastic balls for the show, plus some spares (see them in the original photo). I was using some of them to test vend, but it seems they are bigger than 1430 ct.

If you get this working, upload a video.  Maybe there was some that would vend 2 gumballs, but normally they would vend one gumball out, then push 10 plastic balls to top to run down the show panel.

See video link:

I've got it working. I needed to adjust the position on the perspex plate around the wheel. There were three different sets of holes.

I have tested it with some of the plastic display balls and included a video for you entertainment.

It definitely vends out 2 or 3 gumballs each time (roughly 50:50 from my testing) for $1.

This does sound familiar now.  We normally made the Vortex which is about the same. Global Gumballs had us make a few special for them and it does seem like we set a few up differently for them. They just had some alterations and put their Spiro Gyro decals on our machine.  For the ones we had sold, they pushed up 10 plastic balls to the top while only vending out 1 gumball for 25 cents.  I can't remember if we altered the vend to 2 or 3 gumballs or if that alteration was done by them before reselling the machine. It does however look like you have it running good enough though. It looked like it may have only pushed up about 5 balls to do the show. I know how to make things better now, so hopefully I can find time to make new versions. Those machines were built from a previous partnership company that closed, but I restarted as sole owner of my new company.
