New Location Question

I went to a new location after 2 weeks and was hoping to have a handful of quarters. I was very disappointed with what I got. The location is a busy service center near downtown. It always has cars coming and going and people waiting. I have a single gumball in there that is right by the coffee machine. The location does sell some candy and drinks but no gumballs so there is no competition, All my other service center locations have done great starting out and still do great. Has anyone ever had a really slow location to start out with but it turned out to be great? In talking to the owner when I placed it they had one there before but the person never filled it and it was abandoned. So if there was a demand in the past I don't know why mine would be a bust so far.

I've never had a location that started out slow that then significantly picked up later. I've had some that started off slower and then stayed pretty much steady at that rate. If there was prior equipment that was abandoned, you may now know why the guy stopped showing up to collect from it.

That said, you still have a good opportunity to make something here- you just might have to try a few different products to see what works best. For instance, were I going into an automotive place with a single head, gumballs wouldn't be my first choice. Not to say they wouldn't sell, but they might not sell as well as some types of candy to someone waiting. I know many ops who have had much more success with 'chicle' style gum in these locations too over traditional gumballs too, where people are getting a few smaller pieces over one large chunk. Hard to explain exactly, it's one of the traits of auto places.

Were I you, I'd run what you've got for  a cycle or two to see what happens, and if it remains slow, swap in something else. Some candy the other ops don't have, and go from there. Good luck!

I'm going to run it for awhile and see what happens. I'm not sure about using chocolate but it might work. Skittles are out of the question since he sells bags of skittles behind the counter.

Mage, after 2 weeks it only did 50 cents. It was actually 11 days because it's one of those locations that are kind of hard to catch do to no weekend hours. It is in the corner of the waiting area beside the coffee pot. You can see it as soon as you walk in.

OUCH! 50 cents in 11 days is bad!

I'd start looking for a new home for that one- there are better locs out there for sure.

I will have to respectfully disagree. IMO 11 days is absolutely not enough time to determine if a location is a winner or a loser. 6 months minimum. Vending is a marathon not a sprint. Some weeks are good some are bad. For a single head gumball I would hope for a $30 take in a 90 day cycle but I would not pull it  if it did $15. Have some patience unless you need the machine in a proven winner of a location. For God's sake don't pull it and put it in your garage.

  • 3 weeks later...

Update: I went back a little over a month after my last service. I had some hopes that maybe it turned around....nope only a $1.75. I was about to pull it but it's better than sitting at home. Should I try a 2 for 25 wheel, runts? I am not even sure about the runts. The location sells other candy such as skittles, reeses etc themselves.
