maestro489
I have a compressor that froze over and caused the drinks not to cool. I unplugged it over the weekend and these pictures show what it looks like after 72 hrs of cooling. I am assuming it will slowly freeze back up. Any ideas why it is freezing up? And what are my options? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

maestro489
Thermostat sounds like a cheaper fix than a new compressor. How can I be sure it's the thermostat and not the compressor having a freon leak Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Snickers
I have always just assumed that the thermostat is good if the compressor shuts off when turning the dial off and the compressor starts up when turned on. I have replaced a lot of cooling decks on a lot of old dixies and vendos and never once has that not fixed the problem only to go back and replace a thermostat. I'm no professional by any means but I have never seen a thermostat be bad on one of those old single price machines. I'd say that cooling deck needs serviced. AZVendor
I can see that your thermostat is correct for your machine and it's set at 3 1/2 which is correct. Check for any air leaks into the cabinet especially from a non-tightening T-handle or a loose or torn bottom edge of the inner door seal. If the cabinet doesn't drain all its moisture out then that will also freeze on the evap but it looks like your cabinet is pretty dry. If all of this checks okay then you'll need to sit at the machine and listen to a cooling cycle. Open the door until the compressor starts and then close it and let it run to completion. It should run for 7-10 minutes if the products are all cold and then it should turn off and stay off for 10-15 minutes in a typical indoor location. If the compressor is off for a much shorter period of time, like 1 or 2 minutes before it restarts then your thermostat is short cycling and is bad. If all checks out okay then you have low freon and it needs to be recharged, which can be done on location by a good vending tech.
lacanteen
From the pic, Cajun is right, it's low on gas.
maestro489
That's what I'm thinking too. But let me add this update. I went over there today with a new compressor and all the ice was gone with a puddle under it. So o didn't install the compressor but will be back there on Tuesday to Check again. Any ideas? AZVendor
If there is a puddle that isn't draining then that will keep the humidity up in the cabinet and cause the frosting of the evaporator. Make sure that water can drain out of the cabinet. You have said that the evap freezes but if it only does what you show in your photos then it's not freezing at all but just frosting a little bit from high humidity. Freezing is when the evaporator is a block of ice or turning into one. If this problem persists and you can't pin it down to one of the things I've mentioned in this post or the one above then you might have bad valves in the compressor which can play havok with your evaporator. That would require a new compressor. Check this: if the accumulator (vertical bulb in front of the evaporator) is ice cold then you probably have bad valves leaking on the high side. The accumulator should be cool but not freezing cold.
