Thoughts on rust

I was cleaning up some machines I bought used, and changing out all the brush housings because they had a little rust. Then the thought came to me, these machines were recently in use, is the rust such a terrible thing?

A quick google search (https://www.krown.com/blog/2014/08/deadly-effects-human-rust-ingestion/ https://van.physics.illinois.edu/qa/listing.php?id=12540  https://www.reference.com/science/rust-harmful-body-ec43fd9a2c42d8a0)  and you can see all sorts of sites that tell you a little rust is pretty harmless and if nothing else a little beneficial to intake daily iron.

I tend to be a bit more picky with my machines than most operators around here anyway. But also am always trying to keep costs down to a reasonable extent. So now I'm trying to understand why a little rust is such a major concern? Any thoughts?

I take the brushes off, hold them with needle nose pliers and clean them up using a wire wheel on a bench grinder. They look good as new and it takes no time at all to do. I like them to look good in case the machine should go empty. Rusty springs can be construed as dirty and unhygienic by customers and location owners.

I agree with gumball guy. It may not necessarily be bad for you, but the perception you get is dirty unmaintained equipment. Unfortunately, with vending machines, you won't be there to explain to the people seeing your machines that is basically harmless.

Yea I guess the empty machine is a consideration. Doesn't happen too often to me, but still, worth keeping in mind.

What do you guys feel about cracked globes?
