I did vote, seems like I am one of the few but I went with XYZ Vending to start. I guess I will see how they do, but I also am looking to purchase an existing routes that have 1800 vending machines. So I might be an owner of those pretty soon, if everything works out that is...

Baxson,

Let us know what you think of them when they come in. I have thought about using them as well. I am interested in the quality. I have a few from Amerivend and I was wondering if they were comparable.

baxson, make sure you know what you are getting before you buy too many dentyne ice machines. the product cost is very high. you only give out 2 pellets per vend in their machines.

specialty vendors do not always mean " better" vendors.

ask all of the people that bought all of the altoids machines.

aint broke dont fix it.

Well I bit the bullet and purchased very few, I mean few Dentyne Ice machines! Six to be exact :). Spoke with Steve, president, very motivated guy if I do say so myself. Anyways, I don't feel so bad purchasing these machines as they are pretty cheap compared to other Biz-OP deals, and I know it will place well in many locations. You won't believe how many people love sugar free stuff! Seriously you start throwing around sugar free, and don't ever say low-carb they go into convulsions :P. So I figure the gum will do well in upscale places, and being where I am from even the Dunkin Doughnuts think they are high scale..sad place I live. Anyways, I'll let everyone know how they do, I get them on Friday and I am off to locate them on Saturday hopefully!

I think I have nailed a couple places that will love them, well at least they would love to replace their mentos machine that they have in there. So we will see, as always keep ya posted.

Dave,

You're too close for comfort! I was in suffield today and thought of you. I didn't try to locate any there though. Not yet. :D I didn't realize how "hoity-toity" that place was! Nice area though.

No toe stepping Now:)

Im not going to do alot of route building up in that area. WIndsor - Rocky Hill is my bread and butter. WE will have to set up a time to meet to introduce ourselves some time you come into the Nutmeg state.

Sure.

Also keep me in mind if you ever need someone to take those northern locations off your hands. I may be interested. How many do you have up there anyway?

Dave,

For the good of the group, could you please start a thread that outlines your experience with buying that route. I personally have never purchased an existing route so the info would be helpful. Let us know about what we should be aware of, what to watch out for and what kind of paperwork it involves. I think there might be others here who would like to know more about it.

I think purchasing an existing route is a good idea, if you can low ball them.  I can't tell you how many machines I see empty and dirty on location.  The owners call them to pick them up and they never show???  Vendstars seem to be the most popular ones that get ignored.  I can't imagine spending that kind of money on product, location, and equipment, and then never going back to at least pick it up.

I am seriously thinking about putting an ad on Craigslists just offering to buy anyone who has a decent size route and wants out of the buisness before I buy brand new and pay a locator.  Although there are negatives to this approach too.

This goes along with what I've been saying for quite some time. Vendstars are perceived as newbie machines. The majority of these machines were purchased by people just getting into the business who have not done their due diligence in researching the industry. They fall for the "most for your money" mentality, go all in, then realize that vending isn't the get rich scheme they were sold on. Most people simply cut their losses and just forget the machines where they are.

Not all Vendstar operators fall into this category but most do. Some make due with their Vendstars and even swear by them.

Your approach seems like a good one. Kind of like buying distressed properties. You will find very motivated sellers. Maybe you can give the locations a little TLC and bring up the books, then sell them off for a profit. You can also keep the best locations and replace the Vendstars with a better suited machine at some point.

Agree, the Vendstar's have a lot of good features, the negatives are that they are a little dull in color and made out of plastic, but for the right price who cares!

The only unattractive part about this approach is again having multiple sets of keys.  Let's say you go full time and have 400 machines. You could be dealing with over 40-50 sets of keys!  A major headache for me personally...  I realize you can replace the locks, but now I have to buy the locks (2 for each machine), drill them out (or pay someone too).  So how much is that times 400?

The positive is you're getting the machine extremely cheap and hopefully it's already located if the owner isn't to upset and wants it out of there.
