Doubts

blog-0992326001336658056.jpgThe idle time waiting for my first machines to arrive from Beaver is tough. Everywhere I go now, I look for gum ball machines and toy machines, to see the variety of setups.

While standing around the movie theater lobby I spied this unit. I was struck by the variety and quantity of merchandise crammed into a small setup. Those are Beaver machines, so I presumed them to be the same dimensions as what I ordered - 11"x11"x30" tall (mine are to be 26" tall).

There's 8 machines on this one wood rack, double-deckered, as it were. Is my storage box plan a dumb idea? This wood rack is roughly 24" deep and 46" wide. Mine would have only 4 units in the same space - single row. Will my plan take up an unnecessary amount of real estate for the few machines? At such expense - building the crates is a huge part of the cost - I really want to get it right the first time. But this idea seems so original, I haven't found anything else like it. So it's all new.

I figure, the only way I can really judge is to actually build the first box. I stared at this movie rack for an hour, debating. But in the end, I think I'll stick with my current design. After all the self-doubt, I end up right back where I was.

Ugh, I wish the first two Beavers would arrive.

Seems to me your major consideration of the logistics of moving these machines along with your other equipment and supplies for major shows more than makes your idea of custom, and more expensive, protective cases seem valid. This set-up is indeed much simpler but it was never intended to be moved about frequently and being stored during non events. It was meant to be brought it, set-up and operate in one position for a long period of time. It was also meant to cater to a wide variety of interests, to pull in as many customers as possible in a location that attracts all types. You are targeting a much more specific location(s) and customer types that you know have an interest in what you are offering. Personally I would take fewer offerings to a targeted and qualified audience than a ton of offerings to a very random audience. I think your spot on on your original idea so far, not that thinking it over and looking for improvements or other ways to do it aren't good, I just don't see it in this example. My 2 cents.

rdendy, you are correct. Specifically what I was looking at on this theater setup, was that it appears the base itself is nearly large enough to contain all the vend units within it. This is really the same thing I'm doing. So I was staring, contemplating, If I made the base just a bit deeper, I could build this L-box and put all units inside it. Or I could build 2 separate boxes that attach to each other in this arrangement.

But when I calculated (estimating, looking at this box) the total storage space needed, this unit pictured is about the same as 4 of my designs. So shipping/storage would be the same.

But yeah, in the end, you're correct. So I'm trying to stop second-guessing myself.
