Facing a giant

blog-0167693001343369238.pngAs the date draws closer for me to move into my new high-traffic account, I'm now facing a giant problem. As part of the agreement, I get the space currently occupied by the store's old machine, a Victory Jr. Giant gumball machine, if I agree to take the machine off of their hands. Sadly, I can't find a single picture across cyberspace for one of these machines, so I've slotted in a picture of my brother's chinchilla Oscar. This single machine has been on this location for decades, and has fared time's wrath fairly well. However, it is simply massive- it's footprint is equal to that of the 5-way I'm bringing in.

My new concerns are not in the machines I plan to place there- that has already been worked out thanks to a few members on this board- but what I'm to do with a 7-foot-tall 40 year old gumball machine.

Now, it's functional, and I'm fairly certain I can clean it up and make it look good again, but what location could ever use something like this?

For all I know, this deal could still explode in my face and I'll have nothing to show for it- nothing is certain until I have machines sitting on site. But, a failure to plan is a plan to fail, of something like that, so I intend to use this blog to chronicle my efforts to make use of this machine.

Any and all ideas are welcome at this point, as I've got a whole lot of nothing.

Stay tuned for the awesome adventures of Performa and his Giant! (Maybe!)

If it looks fairly old and unique I would look for a fairly high traffic museum to place it in. Most of them are non-profit so would love a little commission, it would give them just one more novelty item/piece of american history to showcase and would probably be easy to locate there. Just my thoughts off the top of my head.

My second thoughts might be to use it as a promo item and foot in the door type deal. When you approach any type of location that has promos a lot, tell them that you also offer the use of a very unique gumball machine that could add a little excitement to any event, available to your locations with your other everyday machines are located. Make sure they will cover pick-up and return of it though lol. Just think, buy a box of the winner gumballs and a bunch of white gumballs, fill'er up and all of a sudden a car dealership has a weekend "get the winner, get a extra $500 off", the local lodge having it's fish fry or BBQ has a "win a plate", or can be used for just about any type of random raffle type situation. You may need to see if you can make the mech free or charge, depending on their needs. Most won't ever use it but it will give them the impression they are getting something else of value by letting you in their location, just an added selling point.

I don't know what kind of giant machine would be 40 years old?? I do know about 1992-94 there was giant gum ball machines being offered by the same company that went on to found the "wizard" spiral machines..OK manufacturing has a model on their website

Those giant machines where mainly for malls or big amusement parks if its the kind Im thinking about...

They where so big and so much gum that when i was locating racks in some places that had them you could shake them and there would actually be roaches in the gum because it was in there so long..gross!!!

...about the only other type of bulk machine grosser than that are the hot nut machines in bars that get full of bugs inside by the their heating element,,or vending pistachios and having the moths hatch in your machine!! happens every time if you leave pistachios in a warm place and they sit for a long time before they sell..

I have seen them go at auctions for as high as 2-300 but mostly people just don't want a machine that big..

I would unload it on CL or ebay..look at the price you paid for it as payola to get the rack placed. You might even make money on it if you get it cheap enough...

If you keep it an idea would be to convert it to $.50,, put a lcd screen that plays a video and record the commercials off of cartoon network of the "Squinky's" toys and then load it up with zoo mania,27mm balls, and a few Squinky's as leader items(as they are expensive at walmart, like 2.99 for 6 of them) and then even put several packs of the squinky's unopened around rim of inside of machine also for displays,,the packs at walmart have all kinds ,like "Cars" and other licensed brands and they look like the displays you'd get from A&A..

just one Idea that could work,,I wouldn't put gum in it as it will never sell it before it goes bad..

I would try like a indoor flea market. You find all kinds of Old, odd and Bizarre things in them. It should fit right in.

Not quite that big. It's a Jr. Giant by Victor, so it's a similar style, but not quite that big. Roaches in the gum is a new one on me, but I can believe it. Thanks for the tips Ron!
