Survival test

I am now a spectator to an interesting real-life test of equipment in the field. A few months ago I approached the county parks department to place vending machines in the municipal zoo to vend food for their ducks in the duck pond. They said they weren't interested. Now I see that two LYPC triples have taken up residence in the zoo selling corn for the ducks. Now, maybe they've been planning that all along, and maybe I did lead them onto it, but I really don't care at this point. However, these machines will be out in the elements, exposed to vandals, thieves and lots of traffic, so we'll see how the little pro-lines hold out. I'll post some pictures in the gallery soon.

I hope to update this thread as time goes on. The zoo is free admission, and isn't too far from my house, so keeping tabs on these shouldn't be hard.

For starters, only one of the machines is cabled to the fence, and loosely at that. The other is just sitting there.

A real-world look at what happens to plastic machines when they're pushed to their limits? How cool is this!

One of the park rangers prolly vends on the side!!

Doubtful. Their "park ranger" is the intern cooped up in the petting zoo listening to her iPod. The parks admin probably thought it was a get rich quick scheme. Judging by the machines, they're probably new this year.

Well, went for a visit today, and the LYPCs have not held up well at all. I'm rather shocked at the condition they're in!

Here's machine #1 in the gallery: http://vendiscuss.net/index.php?/gallery/image/461-duck-pond-triple-1/

First, one head is completely missing. That's not too good. Rust is quickly accumulating on this machine, probably thanks to the high humidity and frequent rains. The center machine has been damaged- the mechanism spins freely either direction, and it's been emptied by the kids in short order. This test is off to a poor start to say the least.

The second triple, here: http://vendiscuss.net/index.php?/gallery/image/462-large-animal-triple-1/ seems to have fared a little better, probably because it's in a more "exposed" area where vandals are less likely to tamper with it. However, the center machine on this unit is broken too- the mechanism spins freely. Aside from the faded paint and yellowed globes, the machines seem to be holding up here.

I'll keep you all posted next time I get the chance to go down there. We'll see what's left of these poor little LYPC's.
