*Jessica*
I was wondering how y'all handle negative family members and their "opinions" about your bulk vending business. What do you say to them, etc. to get them to back off, keep their negative opinions to themselves, and stay out of your business (no pun intended). I don't have a problem with negative friends, and I am lucky on that one. I DO however, have a problem with negative family members, (or shall I say, MEMBER [singular]) I am in the process of saving up money to buy my first machines and this family member has been negative from day 1. I try not to pay attention to this family member, but I live with her right now, and I must say, her negative ramblings about my vending business is getting way OLD! Just the other day she was telling me that my daughter needed new socks and shoes. I have child support money that I spend for her socks and shoes. She knows this, but then goes on to say "Your child's welfare is more important than (pause)--Machines!" Of course I know this, and again, I tell her that I have child support money to spend on my child's socks and shoes. (for the record, I am NOT using child support money to fund my bulk vending business!) I tell her "go rain on someone else's parade!", to which she replies " I'm not raining on your parade, I'm being realistic!" Any ideas on how I can deal with this family member? Moving out isn't an option right now. I have a job I work 2 days a week (beggars can't be choosy---a job is a job in this economy) making $10 per hour that I am saving all the money from that job to buy my first machine(s) plus product. Advice?
shepherdsflock
Ignore them and get your business up and running. Every entrepreneur faces the doubting Thomas at some point. Sometimes that person is even yourself. As long as you know you're not making stupid choices (like spending your grocery or rent/mortgage money to fund the business) then keep at it. Getting a business up and running can be tough and you'll have a lot of critics. Sometimes it's helpful to listen to them, but most of the time it's not. One more piece of advice. You only make $10/hour, so you obviously don't have much money to work with. Bargain hunt on craigslist and on this forum's classified section for used machines. You can't afford to buy brand new equipment right now.
Rick
I'd ask the family member, "Would we be having this same conversation if I was saving my money in a 401(k) toward my daughter's college education?" When they reply "no" I'd simply explain that "in my eyes that's what I'm doing. I'm saving my money to invest it for future financial stability. And if you care to learn more about it I'd be happy to sit down with you sometime and explain my business plan that virtually guarantees a long term ROI." But she won't be interested in that. What's going on between you and this family member has nothing to do with vending.
musser
Ignore her. Negative people usually just want to keep you at their level. You will encounter this all your life. The chioce is yours will you step ahead in life or just walk in circles. Just don't think you are going to get rich over night. Think of your machines as savings bonds. Just keep adding at a steady pace, never stop.
Rick
"Think of your machines as savings bonds. Just keep adding at a steady pace, never stop." This might be the smartest thing I've read on here in quite awhile. Just slowly build.
Priusjames
But she won't be interested in that. What's going on between you and this family member has nothing to do with vending. Pretty much what I was thinking. I do have an answer, though. Quarters. Lots and lots of quarters... Good luck! James
reel
Ignore them all Jessica, theres nothing more easier than to critisize and be negative. Any business is tough to start off, it it was so simple everyone would be self employed, plan ahead, stay on track do your research and go for it!. Just be very carefull what machines you buy to start of with and buy the best you can afford at the time. Ensure you dont overpay for machines, sit back learn and watch and you will see some good buys appear, when you do tell us here and we will do our utmost to share our experience and advise you accordingly. Have you considered honor boxes they can be a good way to create some startup cashflow for you with very little capital outlay?. Always remember its not where you start that matters........... but where you end up, good luck!
allsnax
Whats the old saying 'Success Is The Best Revenge'. I would use that negativity to fuel your desire to succeed. They may be actually helping you.
