rxmark
I have a summit crane on location that is not moving toward the back. When the joystick is pressed back for the claw to go toward the back it just clicks and doesn't move back? Any idea what is causing this? Anyone know where to get support for this crane? I feel lost when it comes to problems with cranes. I think I need to pull one off location and pull it apart and put it back together so I can learn more about them. Billnuts
well start with the simple the control joystick is 5 wires 1 ground wire looped to every switch left right up down so get a voltmeter set it on ohms check all 5 switches for 0 ohms when the switches are pressed could be a loose wire on the direction in question second is check the switches on the claw carriage could be a switch stuck or broken on the carriage there is usually a total of 6-7 switches on the carriage then if all that does not fix it.. hold the joystick in the correct position and check for voltage at the motor inside the carriage if there is no voltage at the motor, could be motherboard or wires from carriage to motherboard if this elaut uses a computer ribbon cable from the back to the carriage that usually fails a lot. bill
ronsidney
if it moves forward and not back or it moves back in the sequence during start up then its not the motor or board,it would be joystick.. remember those reversable motors wont go out in one direction, meaning if it moves forward but not backward it is NOT the motor,it is something else.. so if your home-startup sequence makes motor come to front during startup and it does then it is not the motor,,but on other hand if it does have to come to front during home-startup and it wont come forward then you found your problem and it is the motor.. that home startup sequence tells you alot about whats wrong if its a control issue.. everything Bill said is right about finding problem, but if you are lost with something as simple as a crane i understand that might scare you a bit when someone starts talking about voltmeters, ohms and looped grounds..When i first started cranes they where my first electronic experience and i was lost and didn't even know what to set dial on voltmeter to to start looking for problems..I would spend hours working on something and getting frustrated all the while, expecially if it was a hot foyeur in a restaurant or something. just remember how simple a crane is...it has left-right,up-down,front back and thats it, not a whole lot to learn, just need to look at obvious.. ron

dogcow
the 2nd crane i bought was a nice 24" smart the guy thought he was ripping me off cause the gantry didnt go backwards he even bought a brand new motor for it, and and threw that in with the price. I took it home and checked the joy stick connections and it sprung to life plus i got a free motor

I told him dont say it out loud but i bet the joystick is unplug or bad switch...he bought it for $350 and thats exactly what it was, i sold him a new joy for 10 bucks and it was fixed. the joy had been beat inward and the plastic ball-ring thing was broke, the seller had rigged it with some cardboard and duct tape!!! just buy a joy already!! they arent that high. ron

rxmark
It appears to be a bad motor in the carriage. There is two motors there and only the front wheels are moving which is controlled by the front motor so the back motor isn't moving. Time to learn how to order parts and install a motor. dogcow
How many motors are there normally only two one is fwd/rev the other is up/dn the front and back wheels are connected by a rubber ring
rxmark
I have to check the voltage on the motor see if it is getting juice. It has 2 in the carriage that control front to back and appears to have another to control right to left.
