I'm thinking of buying this note acceptor http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MARS-NOTE-READER-/231004584266

but am unsure if it can be set up to work in any of my machines. Does anyone know if this can be connected to an mdb coin mech, or if it needs an additional harness to connect to one of my machines (AP7000 is the most likely recipient).

I don't know enough about non MDB or pure EXEC connections to be able to work out what is required and/or whether the pictured lead is the required harness. Mostly I run dual harness mechs to be able to add mdb note readers to exec machines - this is just a cheap alternative that is available if it can be made to work.

I use quite a few AP7600 machines but I've never seen this validator - normally we use the Mars VN2511 for this machine.

I did find find this manual for the one you're looking at http://www.monstervending.com/manualspdf/mars/LE3800-3900-Bill-Acceptor.pdf

Hope that will answer your questions

Victoria, Australia is the reason we do not see this model BA.

The dip switch label only refers to pulsed per dollar. Our MDB models have a note that “serial interface is auto detected”

I think it is unlikely to have a serial MDB interface.

This is a gaming/lottery validator that only puts out a predetermined number of pulses depending on switch settings and is not capable of being disabled in a correct change situation as it does not look to a changer or controller for enable purposes.  The AP 7000 needs a VN2501 or 2511 validator and that machine is not MDB ready unless you put a conversion kit on it.

The AP 7600 needs a VN-2501.  The VN-2511 will not fit without a conversion.  Falls, if you want to get a VN-2501, I have the harnesses you need to plug it into the machine.  You need a data harness and a power harness.  Give me a call if you want to get the set.  I also have the validators too if you need one.  970-623-1272.

Thanks for the responses guys.

We use different coin mechs and note validators in Australia, my question was more geared towards whether this particular note acceptor could be connected to a coin mech using an MDB connection. From AZVEndors response it would appear not as it

does not look to a changer or controller for enable purposes

Many of my machines are older Executive protocol machines (AP112, Wurlitzer, AP7000, Selectivend, and Crane National 797 (Exec and MDB)) and I fudge note readers onto them using dual harness coin mechs. ie connect the coin mech to the machine using the Exec leads and connect the note reader to the coin mech using it's MDB connectors.

I have currently got an exec only coin mech in the AP7000, but have spare dual harness coin mechs to use to add a note reader if required. (These are either Mars 690 or Coinco Guardian 6000 mechs).

I have a couple of alternate note readers on the way (one ICT V6, one Coinco MC2600), so will try to take photos to explain when I install one of them.

Based on experience with the Wurlitzer and the AP112 this method works (provided the machine can accommodate the note value in the VMC - eg the Wurlitzer cannot cope with more than 250 times the smallest coin accepted, so is limited to $5 and $10 notes when 5c pieces are accepted (250x5c = $12.50) whilst the AP112 can cope with up to $99.95 (no $100 notes, not that anyone really wants up to $98 change in $2 coins ;D  )

I haven't persevered with the note acceptor in my original post as I'm not convinced it can work in MDB mode.

Thanks again for the feedback.

I doubt that the AP 7000 board can handle an executive coin mech unless you have done this before on an AP7000.  The logic board technology is very old.  You could install an MDB conversion kit that plugs into the machine's micromech socket and then your main MDB device plugs into the kit allowing you to daisy chain off the first MDB device, usually a bill validator.  The kit is about $200.  Or you could put an aftermarket board in the machine that is MDB capable and could also give you a guaranteed vend feature for around $400-500.

You can get a Pyramid Apex 7402-U53-AUS bill validator, that will work just fine in an AP 7600.  You can put in an MEI TRC-6000 for the coin changer if you still have the 12 pin plug.  Those are field tunable and you can set them up for AUS coins yourself.  I don't know how much your coins are worth there, but you can tune the TRC-6000 to take 5 cent, 10 cent, 25 cent, and $1.00 coins.
