Pdm422 Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 I have a Dixie 501e that both lights went out in the door. I am fairly new to vending and in other locations I would just leave them out, but this location wants them on. I doubt that both bulbs burnt out at the same time. So would assume this would be a ballast. Any thoughts?
AZVendor Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 It is hard to say if your ballast is bad. It's possible that only one lamp was on recently and now that lamp has failed too. More than likely you need to replace the lamps anyway, so do that first and see if they both come on. If only one lights and the light circuit wiring is intact (no signs of rodents eating the insulation) then 1/2 your ballast is out and you need to replace it. If neither comes on then verify that you have 110V in to the ballast and that all the wiring is intact. If the wiring is good then you'll need a new ballast. I believe all E-models have the ballast in the bottom of the door. DN used to mount it to the left of the compressor, but they use solid core copper wire for the harness and the flexing of the lamp harness between the ballast in the cabinet and lamps in the door would eventually break the wires. The problem is that the heavy magnetic ballasts are no longer being produced so you may have trouble finding one. You will probably have to change to an electronic ballast which you can get to drive both of your F64T12/CW single pin lamps. You can also change over to T8 lamps but that would also require replacing the lamp sockets so it's not worth the trouble. There are also LED light kits available, but they are expensive and reliability is yet to be seen. Try a local lighting store for the ballast, should you need one. A common commercial brand is Workhorse. If you have trouble finding a ballast locally, PM me and I can send you one. PS: If you want all your machines to look professional and attractive to your customers, replace all burned out lamps. It's amazing the difference it makes. Burned out lamps will make the machine look like it's dead or unplugged.
Pdm422 Posted July 17, 2013 Author Posted July 17, 2013 Thanks, it has the F64T12/D bulb in the machine. I will get new bulbs and try that first. Thanks
AZVendor Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 You're welcome. The D is for Daylight and will give you the brightest white but will cost you more. You will probably want to use the Cool White (CW) lamps instead for the price.
