microlost Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 i need a new power cord for my dixie 600e, can i just buy one in home depot? or do i have to order one? are they different than the regular household power cord?
AZVendor Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Yes, they are heavier than a household power cord because they draw up to 12 amps when the compressor starts. You can use a locally-sourced 3-conductor cord that has 12 gauge stranded wires in it. You will want it between 6 - 8 feet long. Try to find one with a 90 degree plug on the end so it is more flush with the wall and less prone to damage if someone pushes the machine up against it. When you tie it in, bring it to within about 8 inches of the main power junction where the compressor plugs in. Then after using pigtail crimping connectors (or blue butt connectors if necessary) to connect the wires, double up the power cord and use a heavy wire tie to tie the folded cord to itself as a strain relief. Then reuse the cord clip and screw that secured the cord to the back of the cabinet.
microlost Posted July 21, 2013 Author Posted July 21, 2013 Ok, thanks, i will see if i can find one. Wow, it sounds like Its going to take me some time
moondog Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Ok, thanks, i will see if i can find one. Wow, it sounds like Its going to take me some time This shouldn't take more than 15 minutes - the strain relief is so somebody can't yank the connections loose. This will be a 12/3 cord and you can definitely get one with the flat plug at any appliance supply house.
Feral Vending Mechanic Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Do you need a whole new cord, or just the plug?
microlost Posted July 25, 2013 Author Posted July 25, 2013 Ok i found one in homedepot, 14 gauge, 15 amp, 125v, 1875 max watts, insulated for 300 v, its 9ft long, would it work?

Not the best option - you've bought a 14/3 cord. What you want is a 12/3 cord (20 amps) which is why I suggested that you find an appliance parts house - they will have the proper cord for your machine and you can get one with the flat plug. I would not exceed 6' on the length due to the possible voltage drop on a longer cord. The cord you have now is just barely big enough to handle your load under normal conditions and would never get a UL listing for your intended purpose. With electrical wiring and cords, bigger is always better.
