I came across this today and thought I would share with the crowd... LOL

Call was handed off to me because the vendor wasn't cooling. Their tech went out last week and said it needed a cold control.

When I approached the 501-E there was a icicle holding the delivery door open. I had a real hard time getting door open thinking it was frozen and later finding the door had been taken off at one time and on the top hinge they didn't bother to put spacer in and just hammered the hinge down bending it. So when you close the door it hangs up.

That was 1 reason for the frozen evaporator. Couldn't get door aligned to tighten down T-Handle

This vendor had every reason you could think of for a frozen up evaporator. So I decided to take pictures.

You will find five pictures and in all 5 pictures you can see I reason...

Well, they were right about the bad cold control, but you will probably have to replace the top hinge, don't you think?  You might also want to lift the door off and see if the brass bushing is on the bottom hinge too.

My pics didn't turn out very good....... The cold control was stuffed in the back out of the air flow. It wasn't in the slot. LOL

The motor cover wasn't on at the bottom so it was holding the door open on hinge side

The door seal was torn loose below delivery door

The cover on top of the evaporator was installed upside down

And Yes AZ the door will have to taken off and fixed......

I have seen some pretty sloppy work but this one is at the top of the list...

Boy, whoever did that work needs to be out of the industry permanently and his "tech," to use the term loosely, is worthless.  And if it was the operator, he needs to stop doing his own work!

What are you using to take picture with? I use a Iphone  to take my pictures and download them to photo bucket from my computer. you should not have to resize them to post them here.

I send them from phone Samsung 4 by email to me and then put it in photo bucket. So I should get the app and do it right from phone?

I'm not even that high-tech! lol!

I take pictures of things I deem important for me, I plug my cell phone into computer to charge and down-load pictures to my documents. From there I put them up on photo-bucket to post on this forum.

Since the I-phone is a 100% better than what I had before I think i'm hi-tech! lol!

I just got a call from a customer today regarding frozen pop.  It worked great for about 3 weeks so I am going to be checking the door seal, the delivery door, and the evaporator fan to see if I can find something obvious.  Good thing is that it's a 501-e so I can probably exchange the deck for $300.

I just don't know if this has been steadily growing or if this just happened.

So what do you on photo bucket?  When ever I try to post it says it is to large.

I think it has to do with mega-pixels the more you have the bigger the picture, which is why it wants to reSize it for you. I think my I-phone is a five mp and yours is a 10 mp.  Think of a square box, like a mei coin mech box, (Thanks AZ) compared to a box of 50 case of Lays Classic. Now I'm hi-tech

If the soda is frozen you will need to replace the bad thermostat.  No adjustment will correct the issue of frozen soda, unless you had it set too cold to begin with.  It should be set at 3 1/2 on the dial.  Let me know if you will need a thermostat.  If it's just the evaporator that is frozen and there isn't an air leak, you will need to get the condensing unit recharged, not replaced.

Thanks for that.  I'm still a newbie with refrigeration.  I have actually thought about the t-stat.  It's for a DN 501-e.  I have to stop by the account after I pick up some product tomorrow.  I'm hoping it's just a bad t-stat but I want to make an appearance first and see how much ice we are dealing with (the customer said that the delivery door was frozen shut).

If it is froze up it is easier and less of a mess to clean up if you dig cans out frozen. Be careful because they can still explode.

Also after replacing the cold control do not turn back on until the following day. The cans that still have ice in them can still freeze up and explode. The evaporator runs about 0 to 10 degrees. The compressor will continue to cycle and each time the ones close to evaporator just keep getting colder.

These are bottles.  Hopefully the only thing frozen is diet coke and water.

I use the D/N E model temp controls on almost all D/N. I don't like where D/N put the probe back in the back of a E model. It is in a dead air space and I don't think it works very well. Also it is a ___________ to get out sometimes.

I take the cap tube and run it around the accumulator or that big bulb and shape it where it lays about the middle of the evaporator. Don't stick it in the evaporator...... Let it lay against it or alongside. Then set temp at 4 1/2..... If you stick the probe in the evaporator the compressor will short cycle and burn it up over time.
