Warning on Credit Card readers

Recommended Posts

So, AT&T is shutting down it's 2G network. They plan to have it entirely gone by the end of 2017. And their work of shutting it down has begun. If you have Credit card readers that use AT&T ( and that's the default among many of them ) they will soon no longer connect. Over the past five months, I've had to swap out two dozen AT&T units for Verizon.

Are the card reader providers giving software upgrades to another carrier or are they providing replacement units for free or at a reduced cost?

I have absolutely no idea. This whole dropping GSM thing has been in the works for years, and yet I only heard about it from an AT&T tech I ran into at an account. Last time I ordered from USAT, they still sent me AT&T units. Last time I called USAT for tech support ( for a unit that hadn't reported sales in three months ) they just gave me the run around.

I don't think there is anything that can be done software wise to help. I'm pretty sure a different ( hardware ) radio is going to be required.

I believe later this year credit card complanies are going to require the newer credit machines that will read a chip i the card to verify, and if you dont upgrade, they wont cover fraud.  I dont know anything about vending credit readers but do they typically have this capability?  Seems like thieves with stolen credit cards would love to clean out a vending machine.

Fortunately there's not much of a "fence" market for stolen chips  ;D

The chips you are referring to are EMV chips. EMV is more secure than the traditional magstripe technology since the information gets encrypted in each transaction.

Now, EMV comes in two flavors: chip-and-signature and chip-and-PIN. Most EMV cards currently being issued in the United States are of the chip-and-signature type. However, many expect that eventually chip-and-PIN cards will become more common, since they are the standard used in much of the world.

We have already moved to chip-and-PIN here as apposed to chip-and-signature. The main reason for this was to reduce the rate of lost or stolen card fraud. Cardholders here need to enter a PIN when making a payment unless they are making a contactless payment under $80 in which case NO PIN is required.

We will need to replace the receiver to update from 2G to 3G As at the very least new SIM cards are required and they are not easily accessible. $45 exchange each.

The newer InOne now branded as Nayex unit have the chip and contact less vending readers on the street in the US today.

65tremecgt please be aware the card companies never pay for fraud, all fraudulent charges are charged back to the merchants who must raise their prices to cover the cost.

So all customers are paying the cost fraud cash or credit.

Wal-Mart check out will not allow a you to swipe a chip card at check out.

Home Depot has the chip readers at the checkout but allows swipe.  I did not test there chip reader.

I for one no longer use swipe only cards and I am looking to do more business with merchants with chip readers.

Walta - Just curious how your new CC readers are doing, are you happy you installed them are you seeing a benefit?  What percentage CC are you seeing?  I know you deliberated about this for a while and i'm just curious to the results?
