bjones220
Hello Everybody, I'm fairly new to this forum and have received a lot of useful info over time. About 2 week ago we purchased a new vending machine which is a refurbished Dixie Narco 501e. Its been in use for about a week and but we might be having issues with the cooling deck. Take a look at the picture I've posted below, as you can see what appear to be snow (ice) is forming around parts of the cooling deck. Is this supposed to be normal? If not and it is indeed a problem, what can I do to fix this and prevent it from becoming a bigger problem. (cooling deck breaking).
CajunCandy
This is when you contact the refurbisher and let them know what is happening! This is not normal. It should have sixty to ninety day warranty on machine. Warranty work! cajun
AZVendor
That is a prime example of low freon requiring a recharge.
AngryChris
This could also be a number of problems put together such as: -The machine not having enough air flow (not enough space between the back of the machine and the wall to allow it to "breathe") -There is an air leak (such as a stuck delivery door) causing humidity to enter the machine and freeze up on the coils -The evaporator fans aren't working. Assuming there's no obvious air leak AND there is plenty of space behind the wall, then I agree with Cajun and AZVendor, you should contact the seller and tell them about the problem. Let them swap decks out too.
rmorris1953
Hard to really tell from the pic. Top left corner of pic I see frost on top of delivery chute. Before deciding if it is low on refrigerant. Are the evaporator fans ( 2 on a D/N 501-e ) both running? Is the drain hose connected? Is the door seal intact, is the delivery door intact and working freely? Will the thermostat turn off compressor? Is there hucky puck around the suction line coming through cabinet? Is the vendor level? If it isn't you may not be getting door tight when closing. If all checks out you might need it charged. If the compressor has a service valve in it. Check the serial number on the deck. if it ends in U, V, or W those decks have bad evaporators that can't be repaired. Pin holes all through them. Recharging them last in most cases maybe 6 mo. Technivend
I know most of this has been covered but that looks like air infiltration in the cooling compartment to me. Check the following (in any order) Delivery door isn't missing Door is closing tightly Door gasket is in good shape The drain hose is not missing and is in a loop And of course confirm that the evap fan is not only spinning but that the blade is attached and it is moving air. bjones220
Thanks for all the replies guys, it has been really helpful. I was wondering something though, if this were to happen again and I suspect that the coolant needs re-charging this is something I can easily do myself right? That refridgeration coolant you see at Walmart can that be used or is that the wrong kind?
rmorris1953
These are sealed units in most cases. Refrigerant you buy at Wally world is Automotive and contains oil and other additives. It will destroy any hope of repairing your unit. It isn't the same as recharging a car AC. You need the proper equipment and experience to perform the necessary work on these units. Leave it for the professionals or it is very possible you will end up spending more in the long run. Not knowing what you are doing can be very dangerous to you and those at the place of business. You could start a fire and kill someone.
