Snickers
Does anyone have links to any videos showing card readers added to old AP LCM and 6000/7000 series machines? I know it's possible to do but I can't seem to find any real info or videos where people have done it. The machines have already been retro fitted with the in one and or VE boards. I'm sort of on the fence about the card readers with this whole fraud liability switch that took place in Oct. is it even safe for a small guy to install one? And if so will the hardware soon be replaced by the chip reader?
lacanteen
It depends on your card provider. USAT basic reader (G9) comes with a template to drill holes and surface mount the swipe reader. The modem will mount near the machine control board as you want to plug the reader into the MDB harness first, before the bill acceptor & changer. The A/P 6/7000 will require an extension harness for the swipe reader to reach from the door to the slid-out. Just drill some small holes across the top of the door and cabinet and use zip ties to hold in place. I don't know of any video, but can take pictures. I just completed a LCM machine Friday. I'll submit later. Your 2nd option is to use a bezel mounted reader that mounts to your bill acceptor. I don't use these because it confuses customers, but Coke & Pepsi use them. Also, a study by a source I can't name proved that the independent card readers were used more than bezel mount.
lacanteen
I start by using a magnet to hold the drilling template and then use a spring loaded punch to mark the 5 hole locations. Here is the mounted swipe reader Here is the inside view of the final installation
Snickers
Wow that looks pretty slick. Sounds pretty straightforward and easy to do. Thank you!
AZVendor
You can't name a study source? Canteen did their own study and is afraid the common sense info might get out? JK - got to give you a bad time about that. The card readers can be installed in any MDB machine. Just make sure that on the InOne board you are actually using an MDB mech and validator. InOne is the only aftermarket board that allows you to mix micromech and MDB but you can't have any micromech device in use when using a card reader. The USAT readers are a cinch to install on the door and the harnessing plugs into the machine's MDB before anything else does. The card reader comes with a Y harness that goes to the machine MDB first then splits and goes to the card reader and also to the validator harness. The validator harness then goes to the coin mech. Walta
Before anyone adds a CC reader to an older machine please take the time to read the ADA rules for vending. The way I read it adding a CC reader to the machine voids the machines grandfather exemption and if a CC is added every part of the machine must conform to all ADA regulations. I am not saying do not do it just that you should understand you maybe breaking the rules and one day the rules may be enforced. Walta
orsd
Aren't non bolted down vendors technically furniture and thus not subject to the ADA?
lacanteen
Aren't non bolted down vendors technically furniture and thus not subject to the ADA? Depending upon who reads the ADA 'law', the requirements are limited to new government installations/replacements and/or request of the facility management/ownership. IOW, if I replace a machine at a post office is must be ADA compliant. If I have a grandfathered machine somewhere and the location wants to comply I need to reasonably accommodate. All of that aside, we are starting a 6600 upgrade today and I hope to have pics of the card install.
Snickers
I would love to see pictures of the card reader install on that 6000.
lacanteen
Here is the 6600 progress: Here is the "before" shot: Machine has been stripped, washed and painted, tuffront, and drilled (template upside down to keep the harness away from the slide out. A look at the inside of the door (Note the extension harness): Inside top of cabinet: Modem and In-One VMC: Viola!
wegroup
I wonder if this could be done to some AP 5500's?
lacanteen
I wonder if this could be done to some AP 5500's? The only place to put the swipe would be under the select panel, behind the main board.
AZVendor
The only place to put the swipe would be under the select panel, behind the main board. Except the main board on the 5500 will need to be replaced by an aftermarket MDB board so there should be plenty of room for holes without a logic board in the way. wegroup
Do you think it would be cost effective to change over some older machines like that?
lacanteen
Do you think it would be cost effective to change over some older machines like that? I no longer flip 5500s when they come off location as there were too many issues with the coin path if the door didn't close right, and a poorly designed selection bezel system. Remember 5500s are Circa 1982. Also, the lift handle wasn't very secure and has been obsolete for years now.

SCDoc8
I have a pulse interface USA Tech Card reader. I would like to see if I can incorporate this into my DN Machine with a TRC-6800h and VN2500 Bill Validator. I understand it doesn't support this directly. Does anyone have any info on the protocol used between the bill validator? I may be able to use a raspberry pi or other to engineer a connection to allow this to work. Any ideas on this? thanks! AngryChris
Some places sell kits for about $200 that convert the pulse to MDB allowing you to add an MDB mech, validator, and reader.
AZVendor
It is the SEM kit which is $300. They are made in Canada.
AngryChris
For the money, unless the machine is hard to switch out, I would invest into a later model machine that already has MDB and looks much better and works as it should.
