Coin Counter/Sorter. Best Deal?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have almost 100 snack/drink machines and have been counting/sorting my change with just a royal sovereign from Sam's.  I just thought this was the norm until I did some digging and found out there are better/quicker machines out there.  It takes me roughly 2-4 hours each week to roll the coins and I've been doing my research to find a new sorter/counter.  Hopefully I can get that number down under an hour per week.

I was originally just going to order a brand new CoinMate CS-2000 for around $375.  However with this machine, I'd have to sort/count the quarters, then nickels, then dimes.  This machine is awesome, but I'd rather not have to do 3 steps for each count when I can potentially just do 1.  I've read the other topics from years past dealing with counter/sorters but most of those threads are multiple years old.  I found a couple counter/sorters on craigslist from around the country and figured I'd post them on here and see what ya'll think.  Hopefully I can then convince the seller to throw it on ebay so I can buy it that way.  Here are a handful of the best looking/priced ones.

Brandt 1200 Series $350

Same model (not as new looking) $300

Brandt 1100 Series $600 (too much)

http://santabarbara.craigslist.org/bfs/5312064259.html

Magner 100 Series $125 (if it works, seems like the best one for the price)

https://columbus.craigslist.org/bfs/5238573516.html

Scan Coin SC-22 $350

https://fayar.craigslist.org/bfs/5295547147.html

Cummins Jetsort 3000 $700

https://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/for/5332355143.html

Glory 1993 $120

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/ele/5318343565.html

Scan Coin CDS 648 $400 (huge haha)

https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/ele/5324175852.html

I know the Cummins Jetsort is probably the best one from what I've read, but that also comes with a hefty price tag.  Not sure it is worth the money at my level, but I could be wrong.  The last one (CDS 648) is huge, but I didn't know if it was the nicest one ever made and might be worth getting.  Couldn't find much information on the Glory for $120.  I think the Magner for $125 is a steal from what I've read.

What do ya'll think?

Get the brandt. I count 2 to 3k in maybe an hour worth of coins. Its a great machine. I know cummins are better but im happy w the brandts. I dont roll coins tho thatd be a waste of time my banks take them in their coin counters print a slip and exchange for crispy hundreds

You'll be happiest with the Jetsort.  It's amazing how fast they work and how accurate they are.  That does depend on what condition it's in, of course.  The Brandts listed all have the angled sorting plate and when they wear out the coins continuously fall off the top of the plate without going over the edge to be counted.

One pound of quarters is 20.00

So 50 lbs is 1000.00, so Matt I hope there not ripping you,

I've already broke one of my changers, I'm looking for another one as well

I would never let my money out of sight especially if I didn't have a count on it, if I don't count it I weigh the bag on my scales at home before I take it in, this way it gives me a idea of how much money roughly I have in the bag,

My local bank the one I bsnk at does my bag of change for free, I was in the nearby town one day and stop at the bank to buy some nickles and I ask what they charge to cash in change they said nothing even if I don't have a account with them, nice, which the ladies are very nice n easy on the eyes too which makes it great also

I go to Wells Fargo. They said they don't take bulk change in bags but I told them to pull strings to make it happen or they're going to lose me as a customer. They love me there because I bring snacks every other time I walk in there. I just bought 4-6 months worth of wrappers so they have some time to make it happen.

Finally ended up going with this guy for 200 (+40 shipping). (didn't get the coinmate cs-2000 as I said I would 2 posts up)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/331737726727?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

As you can see it looks brand new from the pictures.  They originally had it listed as "not working, for parts only".  I contacted the guy and asked if it really was broken because it looked brand new.  He said it worked just fine but his partner listed it incorrectly.  He then gave me a 14 day warranty on it and said if I'm unhappy with it, he'd take it back.  Said it was from a company that had an overstock and it appeared to be brand new.  Hooked it up and it ran fine.

Fingers crossed that it is in working condition because if so, I kinda hit the jackpot I think.  These things are going for roughly double on ebay for used models.  I'll keep ya'll posted when I get it and if it works.

I got the Magner 100 in the mail a couple days ago.  It's awesome!  It seems to be brand spanking new.  There are a couple tiny dings on it here and there but it is for the most part spotless.  The inside (or the guts) of the machine are very very clean.  I figured if I wanted to, I could probably turn around and sell this thing for $750-1,000.  I had an old rinky dink royal sovereign FS-4DA that took forever because it actually rolled the coins.  The Magner obviously doesn't roll the coins but is 5-10 times faster.  I have ran change though it over and over just to play around with it.  I rolled the same amount with both counters a couple times with a stop watch handy last weekend just to see how much time I was going to potentially save.  I figured this is going to save me 1.5-2 hours a week of time that I was spending just counting my coin.  That's roughly 2-2.5 full 40 hour weeks taken off my yearly work load.

I was banking with Wells Fargo who only accepted change that was rolled.  The managers made some calls to try and see if they could accept change in bulk that wasn't rolled.  The answer was no.  I said "see ya".  I am now with Bank of America who accepts coins in bulk.  Their cash deposit fees are also much more forgiving that Wells Fargo.  I was paying WF about $10-20 a month just to deposit my money which is still crazy to me.  Bank of America will be $0-5 depending on how good a month I have.  I also won't have to order coin wrappers anymore (roughly $75-100 per year).  A couple other small financial things on top of all that adds up to about $250-300 savings a year (not counting the for-mentioned time that will be saved).

I guess my ultimate point, other than being crazy excited about my new coin counter/sorter is that if you analyze your business and how you do certain things, the results can be amazing.  I just thought one day "I'm spending wayyyy to much time counting money".  I looked into it, did some research, and now I'm going to save a couple hundred dollars a year and much more importantly, spend 75-100 less hours per year doing so.  This tiny adjustment on something that I/we all do is going to make a big part of my job much, much easier/faster.  This idea can be applied to almost every part of how you do business.  I am certainly going to spend some time over the next couple of days/weeks analyzing every aspect of my business and see if there are any other adjustments I can make to potentially save time and money.

Is everyone sorting and counting money on there own ??  We have a Fifth Thirds account and they have a huge industrial counter.  We just dump the change and get a receipt.  Do you guys count your money for each stop?  I just pile it all together.......Would love to hear some other thoughts on better ways of doing it..........

If you're going to professionally run your business then you need to bag each machine separately and then balance each bag to the meter reading (if a cash meter) or to the product sold times the vend prices.  This is the only way to know if you have a shortage due to pricing or theft issues.  Keep in mind that the fluctuation in the coin tubes will affect the over and short but you need to be aware of how accurate your collections are.  This will help you manage your business properly and also give you a leg to stand on if you ever want to sell a location, a route or the entire business.  If the numbers aren't verifiable then you'll never get what the business is truly worth.

That's what we do too.

We count/roll approx $700 of coin each week ... takes about an hour (and best part, my wife does 100% of that work .. for some weird reason, she likes it).

As an addendum to this post, I always start a machine with a full coin mech and then top it off at each service cycle - this keeps my true income numbers accurate.
