2016 is almost here- Time to reassess...

Candy cost is going up and up; it's time to reassess how much we vend. If you're running $.25 cent bulk candy machines, how much of each candy to you dispense?  I know there's plenty of places on this forum that talk about reccomended vend size, but at each day pasess and candy prices go up, a lower vend amount seems inevitable for us all to stay viable.

Here's what wev'e come down too-

Skittles-9

M&I-6

Hot Tamale-6

M&M Peanut/Plain mix- appox 8plain/2peanut

Looking for input from people who have at least 40 machines.

Thanks and Happy Holidays

Since the most popular and most expensive is pmm lets look at those.  Have you vended out a full bag of pmm?  I recently did this and at 6 pieces on average, I came up with $22 for the bag that cost me $9, which is still doable for me.

Anyhow, to answer your question on how many, I would be in the ballpark of what you mention, but I set the amount based on whether it is commission or not.

Also, on most of my machines, I run toys as well, so I have those priced higher because I look to get a blended return on the entire machine.   I don't only look at each selection individually, but rather, is the whole machine profitable, but that's just me.

I have also found by testing my theory at various accounts, that they don't buy if you skimp too much, so for the couple pennies you might gain per sale, it is not worth it if they stop using your machine altogether.

So, to combat the rise in cost, my strategy has been to keep the existing customer base happy, and I just add a few more locations to make up for any income that might be lost.  Has worked well so far and I am the go to machine when there is more than one in a location since other people are trying to cut way back on portions, which makes me win every time.

Just my 2 cents, fortunately, everyone can run their business however it makes them happy.

It all depends on libation. Is it a break room? Restaurant? Commission? What you listed is about commission settings for me. I'm starting tho set m&i to let out 9, .50 on pmm for10-12.

If it's a break room I can let out a little more.

At the moment I vend about the same amounts everyone else is listing. Some more some less. For the same reasons as listed above. I am happy with the profit at this time. Candy has gone up but other expenses mainly gas, had went down. Now if gas goes back up to 3 or 4 per gallon I might have to lower amounts vended.

  • 2 months later...

I've been doing some testing myself and come up with this...

Skittles: 12-15 per vend and calculated to about 5.4-6.7 cents per vend. If I make the wheel 1 notch smaller, I only get 9 sometimes 10 to vend out, which brings my cost down to 4 cents. I think I'm ok with the 12-15 and not being a cheapo.

Mike & Ike: 9 per vend costing 6.7 cents per vend. Seems like a good number and good cost of goods

Peanut MM: I didn't write down when I did the testing but if I recal I was vending 6-8 per vend and calculating the cost to 13 cents or so per vend.
