How do I know if my bill validator will take $5 ?

You need to remove the bill box and then look to the right of it into a window in the side box.  There you'll see a set of 8 dip switches.  You should have switch 8 on for $1 bills.  Turn on switch 6 which is for $5 bills and then see if the validator accepts them.  If it doesn't then yours is not updated for the new currency.  You can email me at rbepic4gatgmaildotcom if you need an upgraded unit.

In theory the CoinCo labels should work like this

No labels or stickers = is pre 2000 small Lincoin.

Black label “$5” = 2000 to 2003 Big Lincoin with no purple ink & old 20s

Label “$20” =  2003 to 2008 Big Lincoin with no purple ink & new 20s

Green label “$5 2008” = Current bills.

Of course sometime things get updated but not labeled and sometimes labels fail to remain in place.

Specifically, the one pictured. I have several like this one that say "$20" in the "Coupon Accept" spot ... but I don't know what that means exactly.

Mine says $10 in coupon accept spot.

AZ I thought this Dba can be programmed to accept different denominations via flash?

It all depends on the validator.  Some just need a software flash, some need an eprom and some need a logic board upgrade. The flash requires a hand held programmer that is expensive to buy unless you are updating many validators.  I never found it cost effective to have a Coinco programmer as the number of units I encountered that only needed a flash is small.  MEI on the other hand makes it very easy to flash - either they can be flashed (flashport model) or they can't so I have one of their flashers.  But there is never any concern of whether they need and eprom or a logic board because that can never be done on MEIs.

It is very unlikely that there is a fault in the BA allowing it to accept ones but not 5s. the problem is most likely in the BA settings, the machines setting or software maybe even the coin mech.

You should check the setting in your BP4sx. It can be programmed for bills up to 20s

http://www.coinco.com/downloads/product-history/bill-acceptors/billpro_manual_925495_1.pdf

from page 6

Configuring the bill acceptor for bill enabling and security is accomplished using the anti-cheat lever and the illuminated inlet. The anti-cheat lever is used to enter configuration programming mode, scroll through all possible configuration options and select the required configuration. The illuminated inlet provides feedback to the user during the configuration process by displaying a pattern that corresponds to each configuration option available

I used the manual seemed straightforward and set the Dba to 1/5/10/20.. High security disabled ..But sadly enough it wouldn't accept my $5 series 2013 bill.. Maybe it does need to be flashed to accept newer bills? I haven't tried programming my machine yet it is a identical Dba..

The MAG32 is an older model so it's very possible that it needs to be updated. The BillPro (not what you have) is the next generation to the MAG32 and it will generally take 5's or more without an update.

Unless you are desperate to make the machine take 5's, I'd wait a while and try to have it updated during a rebuild when it starts giving trouble. Otherwise, I would advise you to get a Mars 2512 that accept new 5's.

  • 2 weeks later...

Would I be able to use a BA50 in place of the BP4SX? I'm assuming the BA50 has the $5 update because it was rebuild in 2013 by Gekay.. That way I can flash my BP4SX without taking the snack machine out of service. I wanted to also take a quarter tube out and add a dollar tube. I have a coinco mdb coin mech I took out of a Dixie 276e that I'll use as a spare..

You can't assume anything with software and if it's a BA50 it's probably not capable of new 5's.  Coinco validators that are upgradeable either need new software, a new eprom or a new logic board.  Because of the cost to those last two items you can't assume that a repair will include the software update.
