USI 3014 "K"

You need to unplug the coin mech and validator and see if one of them is causing the problem.  Plug the mech back in first and check again, then the validator and check again.

You know, I thought about doing this but then I never did. I'll try this but im going to salvage another keypad too. I did try another coin mech and got the same problem but not the validator. However, I did not leave them completely disconnected.

Check that your connections to the board are seated well.  I've had the long connector that runs vertically and is closest to the inside of the machine pull out ever so slightly from the board.  (I can't remember, but I think its the connections to the vend motors)  It caused a number of very weird issues with the 3014a.

I did check this before I put the 2nd board in AND after I put the 2nd board in.  I think the chance of a loose connection is almost 0% considering I put an entirely different board in and got an almost identical problem.

Note: the machine DOES have a scrolling message with the replacement board, but every button produces a "K" and nothing else.  I am pretty convinced it's a bad keypad and I would be surprised if "K" doesn't stand for "key pad" but I can't find an actual error like that in the manual.

If the K goes away and only reappears when you press any button on the keypad then it's a bad keypad.  If this is a machine you've been running with no issues then just replace the keypad.  If the machine is new to you then someone may have put the wrong keypad in it.

Yes, the "K" only shows up when a selection is made.  Here's what I think happened... firstly, there was a bad storm in that area last night and there is a metal vertical support beam right behind this machine so I wonder if the building was grounded and some static discharge messed up the key pad or something.  Secondly, when I first go there, there was a note for a $1.25 refund on the machine and the machine read "K" and I could not enter service mode or anything at that particular moment.  Rebooting the machine still left it saying "K" only.  I tried a coin mech and no change.  Finally, I put a good spare board inside and turned the machine on and the machine said "exact change only" (which all of my 3015 machines do for the first 5 seconds or so) and then it read "enjoy a snack" or whatever the scrolling message was.  I tried to enter service mode but every selection would read "K" and any selection made in sales mode also read "K."  So, even though the second board gave me a slightly more-functional machine, the only possible "selection" that can be made is "K" and that's not even a character on the key pad, which is why I believe the problem is with the key pad itself.

It sounds like I might have to consider retiring a snack machine soon.  Fortunately, I have a spare key pad in another machine in my garage.  I hope it's not difficult to remove and replace.

You didn't mention the storm before.  It sounds like a voltage surge took out the board and the keypad, maybe the display too.  Be prepared to change it as well.

I was able to get a scrolling message AND enter service mode with the second board, I just couldn't make any selection other than a "K."  The first board only said "K" and would not show a scrolling message or allow me to enter service mode at all.  I think the display is fine but I will bring it along just in case.  It is possible that the first board was damaged though.  I'll know when I put it in my other machine and see what happens.

This is a 3014, not a 3014A.  Should anything else catastrophic happen to this machine, I'm parting it out and taking it to the scrap yard.  The 3015A in my garage is in relatively good shape aside from the missing parts, but that one might end up in a scrap yard too lol.

The non-A 3014/3015's have different shelves and harnesses in them from the A models and they aren't interchangeable including the spirals.  They are pretty rare and have L-handles from when the company was Vendo/USI.  I can't remember if other parts are drastically different but the keypad and display might be.

They could be but I know the boards are interchangeable so I'm assuming the keypad is too. We'll find out!!!

Update: I replaced the key pad and the machine works fine now.

Note: The only difference that I noticed with the electronics between a 3015 and 3015A is that the board is sometimes mounted in a different spots which means that there may be additional harnesses/extensions for wires going to the board.  Aside from that, virtually everything I have used from an "A" series will work in a non-A series as well.
