Two Tier Pricing

Hi guys,

For those of you that have CC readers on your machines, how many of you do two tier pricing? I haven't been charging my customers anything per swipe but I am thinking about maybe going to 10 cents? I don't want it to backfire but I'm not sure people who use cards will even think twice about it. What do you guys think? Do any of you have experience with this?

Thanks,

Justin

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I think it's something I should have done from the start. My new customers I think are less likely to have a problem with it. It's my current customers that I haven't been charging this to that are not going to like it.

We have two tier pricing on 100's of machines at 25 cents per transaction. Some people have made complaints that it's high but I tell them to use cash if they'd like the cheaper price. No major problems from this response at all.

You charge .25 per transaction?  The standard is .10 and it might actually be in the payment card industry rules so you might be gouging people illegally.

Actually, now that I think about it, ARCO has been charging .35 for years if you use anything other than cash so you might be okay, but you should check into it.

Actually, the card agreements all say that you are not allowed to upcharge for credit customers, that is why we do the dance about a "cash discount".  Since the card companies want the business they seem to ignore the issue.  I don't use two tier at all, I don't want to discourage card use.  I have seen two tiers as high as .50 per item (Dippin' Dots ice cream).

The rules changed last year when the card companies allowed no receipts for card transactions below a certain amount - or maybe it was a more recent change but it was changed officially and allowed now.

You have to sign paperwork with USA Tech to get it approved and they charge the normal % per transaction on the 25 cent fee. Nobody forces them to use the credit card reader and it's clearly labeled on every single machine that they'll be charged an additional 25 cents per transaction.

Good to know, thanks... so the language on 2 tier machines can be simpler now for those that do it....
