School Vending advice

Recommended Posts

I have a 10 selection soda machine that will be available to high school students during and after the school day.  During school hours, the machine needs to vend low calorie beverages.  After 3:30, I can vend normal calorie beverages.  There is also no regulation on caffeine content.  I figured I would put 5 low calorie options, and 5 regular beverage options in the machine.  I would like to include a couple sport drinks in there as options.

I was wondering if anyone has experience vending in schools and which beverages sell best.  I am hoping that this machine sells 100 items a week...since it will be on the only machine in a school of over 2000 students.  The machine is also located right in the athletic/auditorium lobby....so everyone coming to the school for events will see it.

That means that no sugared drinks are allowed.  There may be some other non-sugared drinks that also exceed the prescribed calorie count.  You won't be able to disable any single selections based on time, you can only disable entire machines with their timer function, if they exist in the programming.  If you insist on doing any high calorie drinks in the same machine with low calorie drinks then you need to disable the entire machine before 3:30 or provide two machines so one can be disabled when need be.

There are no regulations on what we can sell 40 minutes after the school day until 12 midnight.  The principal is allowing use to sell sugary drinks after school.  Even Gatorade has added sugar and 80 calories per serving.  As for programming, I have a Merlin iV and the manual describes how to set certain selections to vend at programmed times.  I don't have to disable the entire machine.  I haven't tried it yet, but in theory, it should work.gallery_12016_377_215078.jpg

Adding a 2nd machine that would turn on after schools over would double the number of options people had. If you limit your one machine to half no sugar during the day you're not only limiting the options to choose from but you'll have to fill it more frequently because it's narrowing their options down. 2000 kids should make good work of 1 machine.

I knew you could offer discounts on different days/times but I didn't know certain machines offered to turn full selections off, or even the full machine. Thanks for the educations guys!

If you have the only machine there then you'll need to service it every day if it will be easily accessible to the students. I only ever had one junior high account and it kicked a$$. We had 2 snacks, one chilled, and one Royal 552 and all was priced at .50. This was back in the nineties and with locking cage doors the school controlled the times the machines could be used which was before and after school. We had to service the 3 machines every school day and pulled over $1000 each week.

That sounds very promising.  There are some vending machines in the cafeteria with water and healthy options.  This will be the only machine with regular colas and sport drinks.

This is my first year in charge of vending and I could only afford two machines....one of which is in the faculty room.  Since I work full time in the building, I will be able to service the machine whenever I need to...so that is not a concern.  If it does really well this year, I will put money into a second machine next year.

If your margin is good then you should be able to pick up a second machine pretty quickly.  The after school portion will probably do better if the campus has a lot going on and the machine is accessable ...
