Stupid questions

How do you handle the logistics of filling candy or gum balls etc? Do you use a cart to bring in boxes? Store them in plastic containers? When transferring from whatever container to the machine do you use a scoop? Gloves? If it's a single do any of you switch out machine and fill in car or take machine out to car to fill/empty? Do you fill in the location? What if it's a restaurant do you have to time the servicing based on their busy times?

I think it's a legitimate question. When I first started I thought it was super important to present myself as a professional and not service in a way that made people think the machines were dirty or not handled right.

But several dozen service cycles later, I do what's easiest. I service some grocery stores when they're super busy and I have to work around a bunch of people, some restaurants at peak times, some places right when they're about to close. I've never had any complaints yet.

I pour candy straight from the bag after I cut a small opening with scissors. Gumballs, I scoop out with a small plastic container, mainly because I don't feel like hauling around that big old box Dubble Bubble and oak leaf comes in. I used to use a cart on wheels, now I use a heavy duty backpack..which also has wheels, but I don't use them a lot since it rains a  lot up here in WA, and I don't want to track rain/dirt into a place. I Use this backpack:

A little pricey but I feel like it'll last for years and  years.

I bought some Rubbermaid one gallon tea jugs. When the lid is off, the mouth has a diameter of 2.5 inches. I just pour it right in, that way I do not have to bother with gloves or contaminating the product or any other silliness.

I use a 5 gal bucket loaded with candy, gumballs, a rag and windex to wipe down the machines. I also cut the corner of the store bought bags of candy and pour them in. I either repackage the gumballs in gal Ziploc bags and dump them in or I scoop them out of the box with a solo cup.

I don't worry about timing except for my one location where I have my arcade and that is only because it takes a bit more attention to service the arcade machines. If I had to replace or move a machine or upgrade something, I would also go at an off peak time.

I always fill on location and don't move the machine. I think nothing good is going to come from moving them too much. I don't use gloves but I don't touch the candy. Have not had any complaints yet.

I am going to have to change my game plan when I move into toys. I probably will not be able to service a large rack with only the bucket.

When I do my racks, for 2 inch caps I bring the boxes the toys come in, I cut a small..maybe 3 x 3 inch square in the top corner and pour them straight into the machine. Pours easy enough, boxes of caps are pretty light so bringing a couple boxes is easy. For my 1 inch, my caps come in bags about the size of a bag of Mike and Ikes, so I just stuff em in my back pack and treat em like I would a candy bag.

I also collect coins in little sacks. They're light, strong, and easy to throw on a scale. And a 1800 triple tray fits inside almost completely, so it's super easy to dump quarters into.

So do all toys always come already capped? How does the size of that 2" toy box compare to the size of a Dubble Bubble gumball box? Also what's your average number of heads per rack and type of heads? I'm trying hard now to get into commission based racks. Thanks.

Depends on the company you order from and the product. I order mainly from A&A Global and the boxes are about, I'd say twice to 2 1/2 times a DB box. I recently ordered something from Allstar and it was a little smaller. I only have 4 racks on location, two more i'm working on getting configured and they're all 5 head racks. I think I got lucky with 3 of my racks and don't think I can continue placing straight racks as easily. I'm switching over to doubles gum and 1'' toys or bouncy balls and am trying to use those to get my foot in the door at locations to eventually upgrade to racks.

When I go servicing I take 10-15 boxes of GB, 20 bags of 1", 10 bags of 2", 10 boxes of tattoos, and whatever candy I may need. Gumballs are emptied into a large tote.  I use a feed scoop to fill large mayo type jars with a screw type lid to carry in location.  I refill as needed after each stop. 2" capsules I use a cloth laundry bag or large plastic bait bag so I can just pour in machine.  Much much easier than using a box. I try to hit 30 to 40 accounts each time I go out.  I double bag bouncy balls.  I use empty bags to refill 1" and 2" to use in other locations as well.

In hot climates do gum balls or candy melt in the car while transporting?

Candy will but gumballs are more resistant. I have a giant cooler and I fill it with ice packs and sit the candy on top. So far no melting issues and it was pretty hot for a few weeks here 95+. I also consider the temp of the venue when locating. I've had gumballs in some pretty hot places and they have made it.
