Dixie Narco 414 setup for cans

Recommended Posts

So I picked up this machine of a guy that previously worked for a route nearby. He had the machine for 5 years after he retired and no idea how long it sat not operating. Problem is, I know nothing about it and the manual I received from Dixie Narco isn't user friendly. I understand most of the technical, but no where in it or on the machine does it say where to set the rear rack for cans. Single or double. Also having trouble understanding the can settings. Then there's the shims. My big mitts don't fit to well in the single columns, which most are in this machine. Any help would be awesome.

The serial number you show for that heap is from 1987. Here is a training manual, available in the download section of this forum:

Most 414s were all single columns, so put 2 cans in end to end and adjust the rear spacer until you can only put i finger between the cans and the front wall. Set the motor cams to show 2 notches. Shims should already be there at the bottom right of each column and are usually white plastic.

As for the cooling issue, Are all of the fans running or not? Thermostat should be set around 3. Turn thermostat to see if unit turns on or off. The thermostat is in the bottom right of the area that should be cold. Get that far and report back for the next step if needed.

The 414 has 9 or 10 columns.  The 9 column machines had 8 narrow columns and 1 wide column.  10 columns meant all columns were narrow.  These machines weighed 750 lbs empty so they are tough to move.  Your thermostat needs to be set to 3 1/2 if it works properly.  Any indication that it won't cool properly when at 3 1/2 means the thermostat is bad.  That's IF the compressor and fans are all running as expected.  If the compressor clicks on and off without running then it's bad.  If it short cycles then you have a bad compressor if the condenser fan keeps running when the compressor turns off.  If the compressor and fan turn off together and the machine is not cold then you have a bad thermostat.
