pdavid
I bought a bunch of 1-800's in a package deal. The top lock doesn't open. Does anyone have experience drilling out a lock like this? What type of drill bit do I need? THANKS!!! :dude:
nam
Those are tubular locks and much harder to drill out. I have done several and some weren't bad and others are a pain. Tap a small dimple in the very center to get your drill bit going. I start with a pretty small bit and then go to a bigger one. You'll have to go down maybe like an inch and may ruin your bit on these tubular locks. Key locks are ususally really easy. I have just bought tubular lock pick sets - one 6 pin and one 7 pin. You can buy special drill bits as well for drilling out these round locks but those are expensive and won't last from what I was told. We have been able to pick alot of the tubular locks but not all. I'm not very good at picking locks but my wife is. Can't believe how many people don't have keys with their machines.
davidsurvz
I just drilled out a couple last weekend. If you work up to a 3/8 inch bit you should be OK. If you drill the center core and keep the drill bit centered you should be able to work the "tube" part of the lock out with some pliers once you drill deep enough to break the lock core from the "tube" part. Then you can use some needle nose pliers to unscrew the center part out. Does that make sense?
pdavid
i think so, I'll give it a whirl and hopefully not drill through any important body parts. Thanks!!
Faith Vending
pdavid: do you have a key that will open the cash drawer? If so, open it and unscrew the base of the post assembly which the center post is attched to. I can't remember what the screwdriver is called but they have them at Home Depot; the screwdriver is one unit.. phillips, one end pointing up the other pointing down, about two dollars. Unscrew the base and then lift it up enough so the center post raises up a bit. You should now be able to unscrew the lock. I'm sure the lock is frozen from overtightening. pdavid
Great idea! I'll try that tonight. Thanks again!
Beer980
I hope you got a good deal on extra locks. I had to drill one out of the coin door and you do need to start with a smaller bit then work up. The lock I had to do it to was one where they got the key out between the teeth area. I tried the trick with the sawed off nub trick but still could not get it off. The guy I got mine from had extra locks and a whole bunch of keys so I got an extra one to try. pdavid
That reminds me, how do I get a new lock? I bought mine used so I don't think I can buy them directly? Are there generic locks that will work?
Beer980
Nope you don't want to order a new one from the company they would charge a lot more for a non customer. You may find one locally from a locksmith. You may want to bring the machine with you so you can make sure the threads on the inside part screw on the rod. I was able to purchase a Vendstar type rear lock from my locksmith and he keyed it to match my keys while I waited.
nam
The people at 1800vending probably won't sell you anythng. I bought some parts from them but had to jump through hoops to get them to sell something to me. They won't sell to you unless you have bought machines from them or can provide them with the original owners name and info and then they have to verify with him that he sold you the machines. Then they will sell to you. I had the entire lower cabinet damaged in shipment, pole and cannisters were fine and hated to loose the machine. They were very nice and shipped a new one to me and I guess I could order more parts now that I have proven where my machines came from. Happy to have it straight as I really like their machines and will buy more if the right deal comes along. I've gotten new locks from Ebay cheaper but also from local lock shops. Can anyone tell me where is the best place to order a quanity of locks all keyed the same at a good price? I can already see a problem having too many different keys.
