Wittern 3179 compressor won't turn on

Recommended Posts

Verify it isn't a power issue first.  If the condenser fan never runs either, then it COULD be a power problem.  Try to bypass the rest of the machine and plug the refrigeration deck in directly.  On usi machines, sometimes there's a different kind of plug.

It's the cheapest thing to try first.  I couldn't tell you how to do it.  I have never done it, and yes they are hard to remove.  I believe the easiest way to remove and reinstall is to use a block of wood UNDER the back, under the bottom of the machine so it tilts forward slightly.  Then, when you have taken all 3,725 screws out, you can remove it by tilting it down as the screws often get in the way on the bottom side.

If the condenser fans in front of the compressor don't run either then you have a bad thermostat or burned wiring on the side of the compressor.  If it's just the compressor not running while the condenser fans run then it's an issue with the compressor.  If the compressor clicks on and off without running then it's possible to get it running with a hardstart kit but if it never tries to start then you need to pull the cover off the start relay and see if the relay is burned or some wiring is burned.  USI uses a lost of crappy compressors so a hardstart kit is the best replacement for a bad start relay.

The key to removing and reinstalled the condensing unit in these narrow machines is to loosed the four screws in the rectangular back plate that hold the evaporator to the plate.  That will give you flexibility with the evaporator to get it out and back in easier.  The levelers sometimes make it difficult to get the unit in and out so unscrewing them a bit also helps.  Just make sure you put all the screws back in and putty up the hole by the harnesses.

Okay, just got the compressor out and angrychris was right. There's a lot of screws to remove to get the unit out. Notice a few burned wires that looked like the touched each other on the overload. I cut the burned out and installed the 3 n' 1 and bam!!! Working like new. Thanks everyone!!
