MEI 7512i unknown coin

Recommended Posts

The easiest thing to do is to turn the machine off and turn it back on to see if it fixes anything.  The second easiest thing to do (if you have another MDB mech) is to swap coin mechs and see if the new mech works.  Then put the 7512 back in and see if it suddenly works or if it still won't work.  If a different mech works but the7512 won't recognize coins at all, then there is something obviously wrong with the mech.  The next thing to do is to see if it works in a different machine.

Aside from that, just check the coin path and make sure nothing is in the way.  It's possible that it just lost its tuning.  It happens in all coin mechs.  It could have also suffered from a possible power surge or the machine could be the problem.

I couldn't tell you that as I don't have a clue.  I don't bother with such things but it might have something to do with dropping something like 15 coins of the same denomination at a time (ie. 15 dimes, 15 nickels, 15 quarters, 15 dollar coins if you have a tube for them).

That error indicated the changer has lost its tuning, and it is not repairable in the field.  I don't know what "causes" it.  I see it happen a lot, they just do it out of the blue, after being cleaned and just serviced even.  People ask how something could lose its tuning all of a sudden - and I have no idea; ask MEI.  When I fix those, I have to replace the whole acceptor if it has the "coin unknown" error.  I have plenty of spares that MEI has re-calibrated for me.  No one can calibrate them except for MEI or their "authorized" service centers.  It's a $70 part, plus the labor charge.
