zjtaylor
I'm trying to avoid snacks for as long as I can. Is it possible to never offer snacks or am I going to miss out on good locations?
Southeast Treats
I think that is the conventional wisdom, the drink companies do vending for advertising and market share; so they look at locations differently. If you are doing OK with drinks only I wouldn't push the issue before it came up. A lot of operators would like to be in that position! When you start snacks, unless you get a super location, you will need to push out multiple machines fairly quickly. A solo snack machine will usually have too many stales, and you will want the economy of scale for snacks.
AngryChris
It's basically impossible to get good accounts with soda only. Good accounts are profitable with snacks too. The only downside is that you need a lot more space to hold everything.
QuikVend
It's possible to avoid snacks, but like Chris said, you'll limit yourself to smaller amounts. If your goal is to keep it simple, that's not a bad thing. As long as you get enough locations that can sustain a snack machine and can stay on top of your inventory and shelf lives, you can really give your business a boost. Do I just have to deal with stales until I can get more locations?
QuikVend
Yea. You'll have to pay extra attention to what's selling and dates until you get enough machines out. I have 7 snack machines and still have a few stales. One thing that made it easier for me was in have a merchants mart near me. They sell individual bags of chips and pastries for the same price you can get the cases. So instead of buying 50 bags, I could get 5. Helped tremendously when I started full-line. Smaller buys, assortment packs, whatever you can use to get started. Good luck!
AngryChris
Only a few years ago, I was buying everything in variety packs. As I got bigger, I'd get a case of lays, a case of Doritos, and about 5 packs of assorted variety packs. I STILL had stale problems... And I still probably have as many stales today as I did then, but I sell probably 20x more than I used to sell. Unless you get a couple killer accounts, it's hard to get around it. It's part of the growing process. I know exactly what quikvend is talking about and most of us have gone through it. Just be patient. I just bought about 7 cases of pastries on Friday.. these are the cases with 36-72 in a case. I might run out before I get back to where I bought them. It wasn't always like that!!
