I did a very dumb thing as I am a new owner of a vending machine company. I plugged the data ribbon that runs from the coin mech to the board in the top 11 holes instead of the bottom 11 where all the wires are. So some of the ribbon was plugged into blanks and some where plugged into the wrong wires. I ran it not knowing and of course, the mech wouldn't give the change. (The machine still calls for it) I thought my mech was broke and ordered a new one before I realized what I did, and now the new one is fried. Once I realized what I did. I fixed the ribbon and the old mech which is still good and didn't fry, still won't drop change... what did I break? There is a little sub board that the data ribbon runs to, could it be that? I'm already in 150 bucks on the new mech someone steer me in the right direction so I don't keep buying things I dont need!

PLEASE HELP!!!

The first thing to do is plug your 1/2 working coin mech into another machine that it's able to work in.  Check the model of your mech and verify that the machine you want to test it in will accept that mech.  You need to find out if the problem is in the coin mech or the machine.  Since it sounds like you plugged both mechs in when the ribbon cable was in the wrong position then you probably damaged the first mech as well and not paying change is the result.  You don't need to buy a coin mech when one needs to be repaired, you can get them repaired instead.  Email me at rbepic4gatgmaildotcom if you need an exchange mech.

Just a point of interest, you do unplug the unit before removing and installing components.  I didn't when I first started, kept blowing things up, got expensive.  On the other hand like they said try mech in another machine to see if it works properly.

Thank you both for the info given, I do power down the machine before working on unplugging mechs etc. however, I have never actually unplugged the machine, I usually remove the fuse... so you guys don't think that  something in the main board is messed up? I had someone that knows about electronics tell me that I have a few burnt capacitors on the board... it sucks because I know nothing about electronics or computer boards and am learning slowly. It's the only part of the business I don't know really, and it's starting to seem like it's one of the most important parts!

If a person that you trust says there are burn spots, even 1, on the board replace it or get it fixed by one of the many shops on the internet.  Burned spot means it is done.  I usually pay around $200 to get a board rebuilt and many of them will give you an advanced replacement.
