Malls

They have several vendors in the mall with various products. Photo boths, toy rides, kid shopping carts, gumball gourmet is there selling gumballs and candy, some crane vendor put in the mother of most crane machines, they've even got those silly massaging chairs. I think someone actually put money into one of them today.

However, there is only one vendor in the entire mall with any capsules or sticker vends. I'm looking at talking to her about securing a smaller location with an opportunity to expand it as cash flow allows.

If I do get the location, I took pictures of all the toys/stickers in the other vendors machines so I can post them up here and get ideas for might work well. (For instance, his finger flashlights @ 50 cents were more than half gone. )

What do people know about mall locations? How should I prepare for talking to her? Please share your experience, this seems like an area begging for more machines and quick expansion.

It all depends on the mall. Some may not allow you to place a machine unless it is on a flat fee for the space. This can vary greatly from one mall to the next. Also this fee can be increased beyond reason during the Christmas season. Maybe to the point of pulling your machine during Xmas and going back in after. Some won't let you do that and you're contract to pay the higher rate during that season. You might also be able to place on a percentage basis in a mall just as in any other business. Expect their percentage or rental to be high. They are very proud of their square footage and traffic counts. You might have to pay three times as much in one mall as opposed to another. It's all about traffic in each mall and what ever they can get away with. Just be careful the mall doesn't end up making more money that you do.

I would think that the current bulk vendor would have an exclusive contract with the mall that will prevent you or anyone else in. Not an expert on malls, maybe there are exceptions here and there. I guess you never know until you ask. Good luck.

I hope he does not have an exclusive contract, because he is in competition with what appears to be a gumball bizop. They also have some areas in the mall with very little presence. It is quite possible they will ask for so much that it would not be profitable, but today is just about research. I'm also hoping they won't be bringing the questions about insurance to be able to place a high five. Definitely some good ideas though.
