Yes, this can be done.  If you do all the labor yourself the cost is roughly $500 for the conversion and an additional MDB coin mech and bill validator.

Conversion to MDB is completely dependant on your circumstances.  MDB is more reliable and can utilize newer payment options.  Dumb Mechs still work well, but limit your options on payment types (Credit cards, etc).

The $150 interface is hit and miss with CC readers. It also treats cash sales funny. It will partially pay out change to the highest price in the machine, and then the balance when the selection is made. For example, if the highest priced item in the machine is $1.75, and the customer uses a $5 bill to make a $1.25 purchase, $3.25 will immediately pay out. When the sale is completed, the other 50¢ will pay out.

Forget the interface (converter) then.  It's never good to skimp in this business.  People are already leery of vending machines at times.  Do you suggest replacing the logic board then, and of course the mech?  Will this be an adequate solution in your opinion?  Do you know of a source for the board, and the approximate cost?

There are two kits that work well.

In One.

Vendors Exchange.  It is the same board as used in their Revision doors.  You can also get guaranteed delivery as an add on.

My personal favorite is the one from Vendors Exchange.
