Royal 552 MDB

Recommended Posts

Yes, sort-of, and no.

I THOUGHT there was a harness available from a distributor a while back that allowed you to use MDB on a royal 2000 (your 552-8 should be a 2000 series) but I cannot find that harness anymore.  I might be crazy though.. and if I am correct, it was for series 5.12 and higher and did not work with any older versions.  Aside from that, a stock Royal merlin 2000 will not operate with MDB.  Even if it did, you wouldn't get cash sales from a card reader or anything like that.  So "no."

However, you can buy a relatively cheap $150-$200 module that converts the signal to MDB allowing you to install an MDB mech and validator.. and a card reader too but you won't get cash sales reported and there's no dex unless you pay way more, like $250-$300 I think.  Even then, what you have is a normal Royal 552-8 with some spliced wires, wire nuts, and a module that simply converts the signal.  Everything else is stock.

Finally, D&S has this board - http://www.dsvendinginc.com/p-9743-ds205-royal-merlin-32000-board-conversion-replacement-kit.aspx which is a true upgrade to allow for MDB components.  I am assuming it comes with an MDB harness but I have never bought one so I don't know if you have to buy the harness separately or not.  I also don't know if the standard logic components are compatible with the new board or if you MUST switch to MDB when you install that board, but you would be crazy to install this board and NOT switch to MDB anyway which is why I believe they would supply the MDB harness as well.  That's the best bang for your buck.  As the page notes, you must use a manual thermostat/cold-control for this board, but I don't think I have ever seen a Royal 2000 without a manual thermostat anyway.  I also don't know, but I would assume that this board would allow for cash sales to be reported with a card reader in addition to the card sales, and I would also assume you can use the DEX on it but you need to confirm those things with them.  For $289, I think it's the only true solution.  Seeing as I really like my royal can machines, I can see the value in upgrading the boards and switching to MDB.  The 552 has a lot of capacity!!

I’m really new to this industry so I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question.

i recently just acquired a Royal Vendors 552. I was hoping to take the bill validator out and put in a card reader. It already has MDB by the looks of it so I am hoping it is possible.

What do you guys think?

I don't recognize that circuit board.  It's mounted to the outside of the main logic board box.  In that case it does look to be MDB but it's aftermarket and you can only try a card reader and see if it works.  If you have an MDB coin mech then that would confirm it.  It might be a Greenwick board which is very iffy with card readers.

I didn't notice the 5 shelves that make it a 7500.  There weren't many sold with less than 6 shelves.  The series is all the same, 6600, 6600XL, 7500, 7600.

There isn’t a power switch but you can disconnect power to it by unplugging the harness all the way at the bottom left corner.   Looks like a regular 2 prong electric plug like you would plug into an outlet.

Thank you two! I noticed that plug. Next week when I go back I will try out the card reader instead of the bill validator and see if it works. If it works I might offer all 3 options and see how it goes. I think I would have to drill some holes but I think it would work.

One thing to keep in mind on the RV552 is that it doesn't do bottles in the narrow columns.  The programming of the sensor doesn't work well with bottles in those columns even though you can set it to two packages deep.

Offer all 3 options.  You already have cash and coins so leave those.  For the card reader yes you will have to drill holes.

I was just reading now on how to found it. Next is to find drill bits. Haha

I will test out the Nayax and coin mech together. If that works I will test out all 3.

I will update with my results.

Thanks for the tip. Currently this machine is set up for cans only. All the cans are 355ml (12oz).

Edit* I forgot this one has one column of bottles. I’ll take a look next visit. I might remove these and put cans there.

I had the Nayax installed but for some reason the card processing wasn’t going through so I removed it for now. if I can get it to process the card it does look like I can use the coin mech, bill, and Nayax all at once

It’s also weird because the other Nayax on that location wasn’t working as well. It has previously.
