nepavend Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 New location on lunch today, a market around the corner from my house with a ton of young and diverse foot traffic. Had a 6-way, 4x sticker and a charity double alongside a crane in the foyer exit, all out of order (except the crane) or empty. I shook the owner's hand and said, "Sir, I want to help you. I am new to the neighborhood, I'm moving in around the corner. I would like to put newer machines in that are not out of order or empty and take care of them better than the guy with all of the out of order machines." OWNER: Is is the same machine as that? When can you bring it in? ME: It it similar but in like new condition and it can be here as soon as I clean it up. OWNER: Good enough. I'll move those other machines in the back, maybe someday that guy will come pick them up. Oh and what is the commission? ME: 30% of what they take in sir. OWNER: Excellent! <Shakes hand> We also chit-chatted some since he knew my neighbor well and the family I bought my house from. ME: Have a nice day! See you soon! Not bad for 5 minutes work. I have been eyeing this spot for 4 months now and jumped and got it!
nam Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Go Joe!!! Sounds like a great location and hard believe someone with that many machines in there would ignore them like that. Lucky for you they did, huh? Next, maybe you can contact the owner of the machines and offer to buy them cheap. Just a little icing on the cake. nam
nepavend Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 I have had indirect dealings with this man before. He tried to get me kicked out of a crap spot in another town near his "homebase". He is based about 25 miles south of me. I don't believe I can even get him to the phone but I will try. Have a feeling he will price me out of the ballpark, that's ok though. I like knowing he will have to squirm when he finds out he got kicked out of a good spot! Bad karma caught up with him! He also has crappy empty machines in another gravy spot in another town in my route about 20 miles east of me, about 50 miles for him. He also just put a 9-way in a Weis market account up that way, can't wait to see that spot go empty and break down on him too. He is an older guy and I believe a son or grandson helps him out, but evidently not too well, the market I got was empty and broken down for at least three months, probably longer. The charity double, I have no idea who that is but that is empty too, but not a threat since it is a candy double and its also empty all the time. I will try to call that one and try to buy them off him.
Quarter Master Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Just goes to show you that good things come to those who wait and what goes around, comes around !
Beer980 Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Joe, the location sniper. Always keep your eyes open when you are out and about people. You never know when you will find a similar situation.
nepavend Posted March 22, 2009 Author Posted March 22, 2009 The packages have been delivered. A nice 5-way NW with chrome tops and an Advance 4x sticker machine have been installed. The back story on this is quite interesting. In 2006 this market's roof caved in after a massive Nor'easter snowstorm. Since that time, they were closed for several months and when they reopened the deli counter lady (Debbie) had called to have the guy's machines out, they were dirty and broken down since then. It has been since at least 2007 since he serviced! Turns out they had finally had enough of them being empty when I showed up Friday. My partner had tried to get in the spot before and the owner wasn't quite ready to give up on the guy yet. There was also a charity double there, no idea whose it is, a double Astro I have seen many of around town. I moved that near the exit, I don't want to mess with the charity machine, although that machine was low on balls and Runts, no bad karma for me! The owner wanted the guy's rack and sticker machine put in back, it isn't likely he will come for them. I figure I will wait a few months and try to call the guy to buy the machines or wait for him to get them, before volunteering to try to open the machines (I believe I have the key) and split the money with the owner for storing these machines in his store for so long with no compensation. I kind of feel bad since the 6-way and sticker take up a few square feet of storage in his back room, and its a smaller family market. I also do not like when someone does this to a business owner. It makes the business look bad when customers are leaving and the last thing you see is an empty dusty and out of order vending machine, leaves customers with a bad impression of the store, not so much an anonymous vendor. Not in my new neighborhood!
