has anyone used a sand blaster to refurb machines before priming and painting i been looking and they are pretty cheap used just need a compressor. how hard is it to do the machines pieces and how much time is involved

as a matter of fact, i am doing it right now.....

I am taking them and dipping them in gel paint stripper, letting them sit over night, running them through a "soprano washer" and then blasting them using aluminum oxide.

if you wanna see pics though, you'll have to wait till tomorrow!

Sandblasting Cabinets run about 300-500.00 depending on where you go not including the cost of a compressor so sandblasting can get expensive. I own a cabinet and blasting system myself but to be honest, its much easier having a professional sandblasting shop do the work that way the time i save from not blasting im out getting money or locations. I have a local shop here that is blasting parts for 5.00 per part but i sent him 200 parts at a time so i get a discounted rate to 3.00 per part.

i couldnt get that rate. they wanted to charge me in the range of 70/hr. so I am doin this myself. you can get a blasting cabinet from harbor freight for 219$.

if a shop would do it for me in the 3-5 per part range I would be all over it!

heres a pic of te results of the process.

1. is the paint stripper, paint is bubbling and pealing.

2. after it sits overnight put it in the washer and it washes away most of it

3. final finish.  get it all cleaned up with the blaster. DO NOT use silica sand.

when you use silica sand as your blasting agent, when it hits the object it breaks down. if you breathe it, it causes cancer and other nasty stuff!

I used a gel on these and dip them. used a disposable turkey pan for this. you can also go to a paint supply store and get a bucket of "aircraft remover."

I have a washing cabinet to use. after the gel has set(overnight) i put it through the parts washer which washes at a high temp. alot comes off this way. then just finish it up on the blaster. I have a sandblasting cabinet, I don't recommend open air blasting, but you could. (wear a mask if you do) I used aluminum oxide media on these. you need a respirator type mask for the paint stripper! those cheap 3m fiber mask will not do it on that. or you can do it outside, but still use one of those cheap ones if you are gonna do it that way.

I just got the gel stuff from wal-mart.

put the gel in the turkey pan.

dip the parts in the pan, take a brush and make sure you get it all over the parts.

take the part out of the pan and put it in a metal pan or on a plastic drop cloth for paint.

allow it to sit coated with stripper overnight in the garage. make sure you open the garage door in the morning! not with you in it either. let it air out.

take the parts and scrape as much as you can off, then I took them and put them in a parts washer. I suppose a pressure washer would do the trick just as well, if you do it that way, make sure the spray doesn't hit your house or car or anything else you like painted.

after that, take an air nozzle and blow dry them.\

then the media blasting begins. most of stuff should be loose, and it should come off fairly easily after the stripper.

oh yeah! something very important. if you have a furnace or water heater in your garage that is gas....the fumes from the stripper are flammable.
