shmookles
I have called Canteloupe, my credit card reader of choice regarding 3x Royal 650 machines I am contemplating on purchasing. These machines seem to be older like around 2000-2002, but seem to have both DEX and MDB. I know for a fact they have older EEPROM, but I just need to know whether they can support G11 ePort kit on them and no one can definitively tell me. I do have the serial numbers of these machines and can provide them, but should I assume if they have MDB/DEX that I am good to go?
Gizmo Vending
They will take credit readers but as far as the newest G11, well if it don’t then you will need to update the eeprom.
AngryChris
It should take the readers but it won't dex depending on what eproms they have. And you can't simply update eproms. You absolutely must find out what eproms are in each one. If they are blue buttons ending in I believe 4 or lower, you can't update. If they are 5 or higher, I believe you can. If they are white/yellow button, I don't think you can. The serial numbers don't help because the boards could have been changed.
shmookles
@AngryChris the EEPROM ends in 6 so that part is good. Can you please clarify what buttons I should look at to confirm your other point? Also where does one purchase EEPROM and is it easy to swap out?
AngryChris
I believe the 6 can be updated to 12 which is good. By blue button, I am referring to the color of the service mode button. But if your eprom is 67100 or 67101 (I forget which one), then you should have the blue service mode button
shmookles
@AngryChris what is the best place to find the -12 eeprom? Also is it as simple as swapping out the chip?
AngryChris
It is that simple but that's if the chips are compatible. I just don't remember exactly which ones were interchangeable. You'd have to call royal and check. But if you can update to the 12 version, you just need an eprom puller tool and you pull the old one out (noting it's orientation, should be a corner that's different), then putting the new one in being careful not to bend any pins if there are any. I don't think the royal eproms have the pins I'm referring to.
Soda Pop Vending
What is an eeprom and how is it important to credit card compability? I also have a Royal 650 but I’m relatively new to vending. I’m not sure what any of this means.
Gizmo Vending
These are for updating a machine without having to replace a machine just because some new technology comes out.
