Dixie Narco 501T controller board issues

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I recently purchased a Dixie Narco 501T multi-price soda vendor with VS2 control unit.

The machine seemed to operate fairly reliably, but wouldn’t accept more than 1 bill per purchase (coins necessary for the balance). The price was set to $1.50. I changed the escrow settings to allow stacking, etc. this would correct the issue for one vending operation, then it would go back to only allowing the 1st bill. Seemed like a control board issue. .

I thought maybe it just needed a “reset”. So I tried to find the backup (memory) battery, but didn’t see one on any of the S2 boards. So I removed the eprom chip, waited 15 minutes, then re-seated it. A couple of pins bent, but I was able to straighten them before re-installation.

The issue is that now the display just reads “rrrrrrr”. It takes bills but doesn’t vend. All of the selection buttons are lit  (out of stock), but the machine is well loaded. Does anyone have any idea what’s going on here? I doubt the controller board has gone bad. It was just functioning and I unplugged the machine before messing with the eprom board.

please help!

thank  you.

Page 46 of this manual.  Item 1. E. I think you effed up your eprom and maybe the board. Dunce move.

I read that in the manual. That’s why I’m wondering if maybe the eprom is bad. Just removing and re-seating an eprom with the power off shouldn't damage a board,

I guess my main question here, has anyone seen this before? And do you think it could just be a bad eprom? Also, do you think the original problem with the bill collector is related to the programing, or an issue with the bill collector?

To begin with, you didn't have the rrrrr display until you effed with the eprom so I would think the board is okay and you need an eprom, but that is only a guess because there could be a pin problem that damaged the board.  Most times when the rrrrr displays, people will just get an exchange logic board.  Then you don't have to guess.

Thanks. I’ll start by upgrading to the latest eprom and MDB ready harness. I read that these old Multi-price vendors can be upgraded to cc readers. .

amy guess on the bill acceptor issues? Like I said before it works each time I change the escrow “ESC” program. But only once. Seems like a program issue. Dip switches in bill collector board are just for bill read options. Not bill stacking.

Wait until you get the new eprom and then see if it will remember the settings.  As to the card reader, if you are not running an MDB coin mech already then you'll need this harness:  https://www.dsvendinginc.com/p-1895-d80490666041-dn-sii-mdb-coin-mech-harness.aspx   and then you'll have to change the coin mech and bill acceptor to MDB before you can add a card reader.

Those DIP (dual inline pin) style eproms are easy to bend a leg underneath the chip and it not get installed.  Have you pulled and rechecked the legs.  Unless the eprom was shorted or installed upside down, it's unlikely to have damaged the board.

That was the original eprom. I only removed to try to get the machine settings to reset due to a minor escrow issue with the bill collector (it will only accept 1 bill per vend). After re-inserting the rrrrrrr appeared. I‘ll just buy the most updated eprom and hope that fixes the issue. .

****UPDATE****

Problem solved!

I purchased a replacement eprom (S2 rev 390.10). After installing, the rrrrrrr error code was gone and proper soda price was displayed.

I also cleaned the coin collector tubes (someone suggested that the coin level sensors may be dirty which could be the reason the bill collector wouldn’t accept a 2nd bill).

The machine works perfectly now. Thanks to all of your great suggestions!

Thank you!!!

Those SII boards have the transformer mounted inside the case. They get loose and the corner of the transformer hits and damages the upper board and cutting the circuit for $1 dbv credit line or worse.

If you shake the board and you feel it wabbling around, remove the cover so you can access the backup nuts holding the transformer down. Make sure the transformer isn’t contacting the boards and resecure. I used to go a step further by added a dab of hot glue in the gap between the board and transformer.
